The ones I found are the electrical type which connect to a car battery.
There are 2 types. One for collecting from inside the tree and another type for the outside.

Picture no 1 is the complete unit for collecting from the outside of the tree. It is 2.55 meters in total length and the cost is £175.00

Image

Picture no 2 shows the handle and motor. It comes with a 12 meter cable.

Image

Picture no 3 shows the different heads for inside and outside collecting. The attachment for inside the tree collection is 1.9 meters and costs £125.00

This product is made in Crete (Greece) and is imported to Cyprus by:
Costas Polydorou & Emeka (E) Ltd.
There main office is in Nicosia,
7a Skiathou, Pallouriotisa.
Tel: 22431418

I saw the unit in there showroom in Paphos.

One extra advice I was given by an olive collector. The olives collected with an automatic comb is only good for producing oil. The olives for eating must be collected manually as the machine leaves bruises on the fruit.

Anybody would be lucky to have a friend like you Kafenes. Very helpful and thorough. I am sure Halil will enjoy himself. More of this type of co-operation and we will get somewhere.

If i may just add something here, the pickers do not pick as such, they 'knock off' the olive from the branches.

You would then need nets spread under the tree for the olives or almonds to fall on and the manually retrieve them.

But i am sure you knew this anyway. These devices are also available in larnaca. There is a shop about 150 m from the Carrefore supermarket that sells all agricultuaral equipment.

Best of luck anyway and have a good day out.

California being the "Food Basket" of the States, we produce a lot of A'monds. :!:

The best way to pick these A'monds, is to shake the 'L' out off them.

There are these machines that grab the tree by it's trunk and shakes it like hell for few minutes, and all the Almonds just fall down onto nets already placed on the ground.

I'm certain same method is used for picking olives also.

Idiotic inventors. What took them so long. The many times I fell off the'scalavat' and nearly broke my back. Do they still have the 'skalavats, the thin telegraph poles with spikes dotted all around it. When picking up olives from the trees the idea was that you rolled it sideways, to move to a different area of the tree so you did not have to climb down every time.

Good job they had no idea of Health and Safety at Work in those days. I hope they have one in the Cyprus Museum.

Halil,

I don't know if it's cost effective to have your own machine Halil, but I can imagine it will be a good business venture for someone to buy one of these machines and go around proving his services to all the Almond and Olive growers, to "shake" their trees.

You could be that person Halil with the "tree shaking" business.

I get 10% commission ( in Almonds) for suggesting ideas.

See these adds.

1. http://fresno.craigslist.org/grd/379005319.html

2. http://modesto.craigslist.org/grd/385569848.html

Craigslist is a good, cost free way to find things.

Kikapu, you are so cheeky with you suggestion. Did you have the 'weight loss' devices in mind? The ones where ladies (gentlemen as well), put this belt aroung their waists and switch the machine on. Hey presto reduction of your belt size.
