ALITHIA: “Euro-welcome” Commenting on the Turkish Cypriot elections the daily said the EU scrambled, just a few minutes after Mehmet Ali Talat’s triumph, not only to congratulate him but bring up accession of the occupied areas with the bloc and direct trade. At the same time, the US commended the fair and democratic elections, Alithia said.
HARAVGHI: “Ready for contacts” Under that headline the left-wing daily quoted AKEL’s statement following the Turkish Cypriot elections. The party said the negotiating process should restart as soon as possible within the UN framework, after it had been ascertained that there would be substantial negotiations without tight deadlines and without anyone filling in the gaps. AKEL said the election result expressed the will of the majority of Turkish Cypriots for a peaceful solution and reunification.
SIMERINI: “Bravo…but they’re bolstering partition” Simerini hosted an exclusive statement from President Tassos Papadopoulos who congratulated the leader of the Turkish Cypriot Republican Party Mehmet Ali Talat for his party’s victory in the elections in the occupied north but stressed that it should be taken into consideration what they meant when they spoke of a solution.

POLITIS: “On the table with Talat” The US and Europe were emphatic after the Turkish Cypriot elections in the north that Mehmet Ali Talat was the undisputable leader of the Turkish Cypriot community. Brussels have sent the message to President Tassos Papadopoulos that they would not assume any initiative to arrange a meeting with Talat or Turkish Premier Tayyip Erdogan. They have pointed out however that they would welcome some form of contact between Papadopoulos and Talat.
PHILELEFTHEROS: ”Cyprus implicated in stolen nuclear weapons case” The daily reported that the island was implicated in a mysterious case concerning stolen nuclear missiles from the Ukraine. Instead of Russia, the missiles ended up in Iran prompting agents from two countries to extend their investigation to Cyprus. According to reports in the Australian press, an Australian businessman who sold the arms to Iran was murdered in Cyprus. The reports are based on allegations made by the man’s family and a report drafted by the Ukrainian police.
