I think there is a balance. Too many cheap flights and cheap hotels = chavs. However, the prices quoted on this thread are taking the ****. There is no balance here, just greed.

I wonder if Cyprus is expensive (when booking) for the German, Swiss etc or is it just us Brits that pay over the odds?

Cyprus is a lovely place and I didn't mind spending a few extra quid to visit Paphos because the hotels were nice and the resort was nice but as we all know its changed and the class which was once associated with Paphos has long gone, but the prices have risen.

Only one winner here I'm affraid!!!!!

You could all try the North, oh sorry we are "illegal "and "do not exist".
Give it a try anyway. You can still have your day trips.

To get to the 'illegal' North you have to fly into the South! As your airport doesn't exist!

Ergan airport doesn't exist????? Look on flightsim or better still drive past it.

I dont think even the Turks could outdo David Copperfiled here.

Other than a Turkish, name me one airport which flies into Ercan.

Beverley

I did read your post. Regardless of the fact you bought to live in Cyprus I am amazed you did not know how much it would cost to come to and from the uk whenever you wanted as i gathered from your previous posts on the board that you have friends and family in the UK? I took a view that having friends and family in the uk you would want to come back and visit but also that you would want friends and family to visit you? Also, i imagine you chose to buy having visited the island a number of times previous, during which i am sure you were acutely aware of the costs of getting to Cyprus?

Furthermore, you go on in you post to say that after 8 months you decided to move back to the UK choosing to rent and use the apartment in Cyprus for holidays for you and your family. Again at this point, did you not check the price of flights before making the decision? You go on to say that last min flights are ok but not for those that need to fly on specific dates. I understand this to a point, but you mention you’re a retired couple and you still haven’t been back in 14 months. Surely as a retired couple you’re more flexible than almost anyone else!

Honestly Beverly, this is not an attack on you, but your posts make no sense at all. Even to the point you say you retired to Cyprus but when work for your partner did not materialise you spent most of your savings and went back to the UK. Surely if you retire you do so in the knowledge you’re financially secure? You seem determined to criticise the price of getting to Cyprus but seem unable to provide any real argument.

carolh wrote:As I've already said, the prices on the board at Paphos airport have all been ripped off, so no one can tell what they should really be. If you have no one to meet you and do not have transfers from a holiday company, then you have no alternative. It is about time that there was a proper bus service to and from the airport.
I can't think of any other international airport that doesn't have public transport!

The taxi drivers have just jumped on the bandwagon started by the holiday companys when they introduced transfer charges of £25 x 40 pasengers = £1000! How much do you honestly think they pay the coach company?
When we started holidaying in Cyprus tea, coffee, fruit juice or water were available free with evening meals, other drinks were charged for, now you have to pay even for water, how many people have a meal without some sort of drink?

Azeri airline from Azerbaijan's airport

its the only direct flight into Ercan. EVERY other flight has to stop in Turkey, usually only on the ground for an hour though

Maybe Cyprus without fewer tourists might encourage us to find other ways of creating wealth.

Perhaps producings goods or crops the middle east market wants or high tech goods or services.

Why should our economy be solely based on tourism?

RAWK. Good point. But look at your island. The answers are there. It would be good if you could be less reliant on one form of income. But building houses for more than they are worth and plundering tourists is not the way forward. It's a limited economic option.

Surely not solely on tourism, what about the ex-pat population, they don't build their own houses.

True... and if they did you'd at least be able to put bog roll in the loo without fear of blocking the whole drainage system. This is only 2007 after all.

no tourists

I get exasparated with you moaning brits who have obviously never properly researched flights before making your moves. Stories of £700 flights are just , at best exaggerations and at worst downright lies. After searching meticulousy I cannot ever say that , regardless of the time of year , I could,nt find a return flight less than £300. There are many flights around the £270 - £300 mark even in July and August. You try booking a flight to anywhere in Spain and you,ll soon find that there is little difference in the prices available between Spain and Cyprus. Get a grip of yourselves and stop looking for any excuse to rubbish Cyprus. Its obvious , to me at least, that you people are just never going to be pleased. Your looking for something for nothing and when its not forthcoming you spit out your dummy. No wonder we have the reputation we have been landed with. If you have a problem with Cyprus then its very simple. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
