No tourists? No wonder!

Last time we used a taxi from Paphos airport to Paphos town we asked the driver to put his meter on. Surprise, surprise it was "broken." He pulled the car over to the side of the road coming away from the airport and said we could get out if we wanted. At 5am in the middle of nowhere we just had to accept his high price - that was £16.
Why can't the authorities do something? The police say it is the municipality's responsibility and they say it is the police! Meanwhile tourists get ripped off! There was a board on display at the airport detailing the prices to each town. It was destroyed by the taxi drivers and not replaced.
Will anyone do anything about all this? I imagine NOT!

miltiades wrote:Thanks Kikapu , this taxi had no meter showing but the taxi driver at the airport told me in advance that the fare was £18.00 , I thought it steep but accepted .I shall be written to the Cyprus Tourist information office requesting clarification as to the legal requirements regarding a meter. If indeed these Taxi drivers are acting illegally they should be curtailed.

It is quite possible that the EEC representitives will get round to sorting out these problems, they've already put the frighteners on quite a few restaurants regarding hygene etc, but theses things take time.
Tourists get charged £25 for the Paphos airport run ex pats get it cheaper.

Have done some more research and what I have found is rather disturbing and frightening. The taxi drivers are a law unto themselves , they have set the cost to £25.00 for foreigners and for Cypriots between 15 and 20 pounds. The police are unable to control this group of lawless people who will take action if challenged and bring the airport to a complete standstill. It is a total disgrace and can only be compared to the Mafia during the prohibition era in the USA , unfortunately few people are willing to take these crooks to task , but the authorities responsible must be exposed and put into a situation where some action will have to be taken. As for me , a few emails are being prepared right now.

My holiday that was booked at £371 on Saturday went down to £352 yesterday and is now £342. If I'd have waited another fortnight they'd be paying me to go!

Lets face it. Cyprus is a mess. With taxi drivers running the economy and not the government, it would serve Cyprus right if nobody ever came here again! When will they ever face up to it? Jail any taxi driver who blocks the airport road for 10 years. Problem solved!

I agree with you .This simply HAS to stop. I have been told that some of these drivers make over £2000 .00 per WEEK .That's more than I make in a month !!!
And they pay NIL tax !! What a bloody joke and the government does nothing about this scandalous actions. Have sent out my first emails to KOT , waiting for response.

I think there is a balance. Too many cheap flights and cheap hotels = chavs. However, the prices quoted on this thread are taking the ****. There is no balance here, just greed.

I wonder if Cyprus is expensive (when booking) for the German, Swiss etc or is it just us Brits that pay over the odds?

Cyprus is a lovely place and I didn't mind spending a few extra quid to visit Paphos because the hotels were nice and the resort was nice but as we all know its changed and the class which was once associated with Paphos has long gone, but the prices have risen.

Only one winner here I'm affraid!!!!!

You could all try the North, oh sorry we are "illegal "and "do not exist".
Give it a try anyway. You can still have your day trips.

To get to the 'illegal' North you have to fly into the South! As your airport doesn't exist!

Thats odd. I just checked Google Earth and its called Tymbou. The latest version shows it quite clear, planes and all.
What is most surprising is that Google calls the north TRNC. How come the RoC never stopped that. Are they going soft on us or what? Its the beginning of a lovely relationship.
