The main expense is the flights. So many book charter flights to save money but very often the fares offered by BA and CY can be cheaper, especially when you add on to the chartered flights the food and drinks.
I am still finding people self catering holidays for August for £1,200 - £1,400 for a family of 4. Those who pay so much more should also remember that many tour operators charge a late booking fee nowadays when booking within 2 or 3 weeks of departure and at £20 - £25 per pax. that can make a difference. The price I have quoted was for named accommodation, since I do not recommend the unnamed bargains unless you are really flexible in where you stay.
I have found that by not travelling on my own, a holiday for two out of season in the cheapest accommodation works out as cheap as the airfare. I then leave my friend when we are booked into Lemesos and I stay with my step family. The worse aspect of the Cypriot Hotels of 4 and 5star hotels is the lack of evening entertainment offered, in comparison to other European resorts.
I am worried about the prices next year when we get the rise in prices which will accompany the change to Euros.

The problem is that most flights are run by tour operates like first choice, Thomas cook, Thomson fly etc... Why would they sell you a cheap flight and allow you to arrange your own accommodation? It will never happen; they want you to book everything through them. You’re absolutely right in suggesting sometimes you can get a cheaper package holiday than flight alone, which makes sense as the operators have already paid for the accommodation they might as well give it away if the cost of the flight is covered with a bit of profit on top. As for late fee’s, all major operators in the uk will drop them, just ask, if the refuse, simply say the travel agent down the road said they would drop the charge and they WILL do the same. I have to be honest though, you must be mad to book thru a high street travel agent.

As for 4/5 star hotels Cypriotatheart, have you experienced the standard of entertainment in Greece / Spain? Its always crap, sometimes funny but never great. Who in their right mind goes 1000’s miles away to see how good the act is that was booked by the hotel? It’s about getting out at night and seeing local cultures and experiencing the place. Not watching an Eastern European dance troupe in lycra!!

The 'Office Of Fair Trading' has just taken action against 13 airlines regarding hidden extras, it is illegal not to display the actual overall cost in the first place.
I hope that they now start on Dial-A-Flight who have always sold the advertised bargains when you telephone.

There are just as many Brits as Cypriots jumping on the rip off bandwagon and a lot of poor europeans coming over,no work,no money,no food and are turning to crime just to live! Borders ought to be closed to all who cannot support themselves or have arranged jobs before coming.I am proud to say that we got nothing from Cypriot tax payers (unlike our country)and paid our own way start to finish. On the whole it was a positive experience thanks to our lovely Cypriot neighbours Angelos and Angela ,their parents and extended family who welcomed us and shared hospitality and language with us.

Beverley keep on the forum with a bit of luck you'll make it soon and we can all meet up for a drink.
Don't think Eliko will come he likes to sit at home alone with his bottle of vinegar.

Just thought I mention the price of an Espresso coffee in Paphos Airport of CY £1.70 , GB£2.00 , comparing to Gatwick airport price of GB£1.20 represents a difference of 66.6% !!!!
How on earth are they allowed to charge such an exorbitant price I will never know . I was recently in Dusseldorf where an espresso coffee was Euro 1.90 , GB 1.28 !

What the authorities do not realize is that it is relatively easy to attract tourists but it is damn right hard to get them to come back .They seem to think that all British , I say British because it is mostly British tourists , are loaded and dont mind being ripped off. KOT (Cyprus Tourist Organization ) take note !

I take it you were also 'Excused Boots'?, most of the malingerers I have had to deal with were assigned to the latrines, You of course (on account of your bad back) would also attempt to dodge that , bit like work eh?.

I would have had you 'Drummed Out' of my regiment before you made a laughing stock of it.

Did you wear white plimsolls because of your 'Corns' I wonder?, private Bisley did in the 'Army Game' (bit before my time BUT, I have seen some old footage).

I'll bet your Son is proud of his Dad.
