Association of Turkish Cypriots Abroad present UN’s Ban Ki Moon with TRNC ID card
03.08.2007
The Association of Turkish Cypriots Abroad (ATCA) has sent the UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Ban Ki Moon an informative letter about Cyprus along with a symbolic TRNC identification card. They also demanded the lifting of the isolations on the Turkish Cypriots. The identification card is said to represent the right to self-determination of the Turkish Cypriots, a right which they democratically enforce through the existence of the TRNC.
ATCA activities
English Association President Kerem Hasan and US Association President Emcet Tas, delivered the letter and the oversized, symbolic ID card to UN authorities at the Ledra Palace with directions to deliver it to Ban Ki Moon. The action is part of the Associations activities which are lobbying activities, based mainly on internet, to promote the rights of Turkish Cypriots
Tas gave information about the ATCA activities and the contents of the letter. Saying that ATCA have operations in three countries, Britain, USA and Australia, Tas stated that ATCA demanded respect for the self-determination rights of Turkish Cypriots by explaining the progress observed from 1960 to present in the letter to the UN Secretary-General.
Symbolic ID card
Hasan said that they had given the UNSG a symbolic TRNC ID card, which he said represents the right to self-determination of Turkish Cypriots, as a ‘gift’ and stated that they demanded that the Secretary-General lift the isolations applied on the Turkish Cypriots to end their decades of a lack of international representation in return for their ‘gesture’, reminded, “as well as this being a promise made to Turkish Cypriots by international societies, this is the most preferential duty of the UN, which is responsible to embrace humanity and respect every nation’s sovereign rights.”
Contents of the letter
In the letter sent to the UN Secretary-General, it was emphasised that both the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots used their right to self-determination in separate referendums regarding the Annan Plan, and there is no reason that the Turkish Cypriots should be deprived of international representation any longer.
The letter stated that there has been no common state mechanism representing both communities on the island since 1963 and that the Turkish Cypriots rule themselves independent of the Greek Cypriots. It also stated that two separate sovereign states had been naturally formed in Cyprus over time, since a common federal or confederal government could not be formed. Despite this fact ‘The Republic of Cyprus’, which was illegally invaded by Greek Cypriots, is recognised as the only representative of the whole island by the international community. The letter also points out that the TRNC, a democratic state governed by the rule of law, is not recognised by any international society including the UN, and as a result the Turkish Cypriots has been deprived of the basic human rights, granted to all in the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, for over 40 years.
Natually occuring States 9hello the guy would think your idiots - Turkey invaded and you ethnically cleansed 180, 000 people. Not to mention yourselves.
Greek Cypriots illegally invaded the RoC - I wonder if they arrived from outer space?
Turkish Cypriots deprived of their human rights. Hello are they may be denying the rights of others?
