Northern Cyprus Property

Postby RRichie » Sun Aug 05, 2007 7:53 pm

Hi
I have friend who is very interested in buying property in Northern Cyprus, I have told him that in my opinion it is unsafe because of the problems of ownership and the possible repercussions, however in his opinion and because of the amount of property being built and sold in this area individual compensation would be out of the question, and any compensation would have to come from some kind of organisation like the EU. What are your thoughts on this subject.

RRitchie, this has been mentioned before on this site. I suggest you send your friend the link below, he will get a better idea of what people think about buying property in north Cyprus.

http://www.cyprus-forum.com/viewtopic.p ... highlight=

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the UK say:-

Before purchasing property anywhere in Cyprus you are strongly advised to seek qualified legal advice from a source that is independent from the seller.

Property issues are closely linked to the political situation. There are a number of potential practical, financial and legal implications, particularly for those considering buying property in the north. These relate to the non-recognition of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", the suspension of EU law in northern Cyprus, the possible consequences for property of a future settlement, and the many thousands of claims to ownership from people displaced in 1974. There is also a risk that purchasers would face legal proceedings in the courts of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as attempts to enforce judgements from the courts of the Republic of Cyprus elsewhere in the EU, including the UK.

Separately, potential purchasers should also ensure that they are fully aware of the specific rules imposed by the administration on foreigners purchasing property in the north including the requirement to obtain consent to the transfer of property

Hi RRichie.

I had a friend who WAS also looking at buying in the North. I warned him and we fell out over this. He refused to listen to me but I am pleased to say he hasn't gone ahead - the reason he gave me was a load of bull and would never admit I was right and he was wrong.

Regards

Tell them to read this

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.ph ... 0&cat_id=1

Let him read the shit others are having. If he still insists, let him go ahead, report him tot he RoC authorities, or let him sink, the choice is yours.

At least he cannot claim the excuse that he didn't know it was stolen land!

Good luck

I would question someone who wants to buy stolen property and more so support and illegal regime that exists in the north. Do you really want to be this person's friend? That is more of a question for you. Would you suport your friend to buy a stolen car?
