I remember a short thorny leafed plant some use to eat prior to 74 called "bangallos".

Thx GR I will check it out.

It must be a GC word not Greek because Greek Google can't find it.

I found one site for wild cypriot plants used in cooking.. Lots of Latin names and no Cypriot/Local names. The references are all Greek speakers. What a pity. Nothing like 'Bangallos.

If its in Greek post the link...

Gallos=Chicken? I will have to keep on searching.

Close! Gallos means Turkey! So that makes you a Gallos Cypriot!

I dont think its Dandelion, as suggested. No sleep for me tonite.

It looks a bit like the lower part of a dandelion plant though doesn't it? I wouldn't be surprised if they're from the same family.

Could possibly be the same plant...."mangallo" as we pronounce it..
Will check it tomorrow with an elder who is fluent in Greek...

Possibly , but I've never seen a variegated Dandelion,

I thought allos/alos was a turkey. Maybe the 'G' got silenced

The text I found was in English.

Mangallo is a smaller plant which grows wild just like hostes but is usually pickled...Hostes is a larger plant..
