Hostes is one of my favorites and i love it.....I think i did mention it earlier on this thread...

It is a rare dish not many people know and it is a dish you can never find in a restaurant...I suppose the "spiny" leaves and the painful preparation of this plant is to blame...

I know it was mentioned previously. I have been discussing the 'strange plants' we eat with my Botanist colleagues and am having difficulty identifying Hostes properly.

A very short plant with variegated leaves of green and a tinge of red. Leaves are a bit spiny' on the outer edges. Halil will know the dish but anyone know the plant itself?

I remember a short thorny leafed plant some use to eat prior to 74 called "bangallos".

It must be a GC word not Greek because Greek Google can't find it.

I found one site for wild cypriot plants used in cooking.. Lots of Latin names and no Cypriot/Local names. The references are all Greek speakers. What a pity. Nothing like 'Bangallos.

Gallos=Chicken? I will have to keep on searching.

I dont think its Dandelion, as suggested. No sleep for me tonite.

I know that!

But the term is used specifically for some boiled variety of leaves (my mum used to make me eat!)
