Shame on the Interior Ministry
First, I would like to thank Yonca Senyigit and the new property complaints office for their efforts on behalf of the victims of the biggest property scam I have ever heard of.
However, my main reason for writing this letter is to comment on the article written in the Cyprus Today (July 28 August) by Ian Shepherd. I have met Ian and I know he is fully aware of the misery that has been inflicted on innocent victims of the TRNC building scam.
It would appear even now, after the Government has admitted they lied, misled, deceived, ignored their own laws, their own constitution and breached the human rights of innocent homebuyers, that they are still trying to muddy the waters by accusing the HBPG of being the group behind the new Bulletin Boards springing up condemning these injustices and proclaiming them to the world. Well let me tell the TRNC Government, the Truth hurts.
So what has the Government done now to redeem itself in the face of such bad publicity? Well, the Interior Ministry has thrown its teddy in the corner, like a petulant child it has stopped issuing the PTB list to the HBPG because in their opinion they are behind the new BB. This was the ONE and ONLY positive concession (until the opening of the Property Complaints Office in July 2007) this government has extended to the people who are investing millions in their economy a simple, easy method of looking to see if the property they have purchased can legally be theirs. What is behind the thinking of the leaders running this country?
The new TRNC property warning site is not, nor has it ever been, run by the HBPG as the Government is fully aware. The HBPG has its own site which has been running since the HBPG started which gives factual information to those thinking of investing in the TRNC a service not currently supplied by any governmental body!
Many websites publish a link to the HBPG site for this very reason the information contained on it can be relied upon to be accurate and unbiased. Some actually seek our consent first, some do not, but this is the way of the World Wide Web it is open to anyone with a computer.
I commend these new sites for their efforts on behalf of the victims of the TRNC, why should they and the Aga group not display the Truth but why should the HBPG have to defend its own reputation? If the HBPG wanted to take this particular line of expression, they could have done so since 2004 when many investors could have happily shot their estate agent, builder and lawyer! That would have been the easy option. I think the HBPG holds the moral high ground here.
To the Government of the TRNC, you have been man enough to tackle these problems head on with the new estate agents laws, the new property complaints office and a willingness to act instead of just listening. You are aware the problems encountered by the foreign investors have been aggravated by your own decision to turn a blind eye to the PTB process. You admitted you ignored the one law designed to offer a modicum of protection to the foreign buyer because if you had insisted on its enactment, your economy would have faltered. This decision affected everyone who bought during 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 and now it seems 2007 because now you are withdrawing the only method people had of even checking the progress of their PTB.
According to the minutes of a meeting held in February 2007 a promise was given that the backlog of some 2000 (now transpires more like 5000) PTB would be cleared and this law would be applied in the manner it was intended to be that PTB would be granted (or not) before money changed hands ensuring that this safeguard, at least, was in place for the foreign investor.
What do these Government ministers think is going to happen if they keep behaving like children, well let me tell you we Brits know we have rights and we will voice them at your tourism and investment promotion venues in the UK and in turn the negative media attention in UK will become even greater.
Embargo must groan every time this Government scores an own goal - when are you going to learn, you have failed to enforce the laws of your own country to the detriment of a minority group that is racial prejudice, you have been caught out and people are complaining to a listening world, but instead of putting things right, you try to create more alienation.
There is a famous saying Do not shoot the messenger and the 2000+ victims you created are not going away, we will keep hounding you until you give us the justice (and protection we should have been entitled to) under your own laws and international law.
Withdrawing a small concession, hard won by a gallant lady and the HBPG members because you wish to mislead the greater public as to the extent of your lies only goes to re-enforce our moral high ground, your threats and intimidation will not work it has not for the past two years, you are not dealing with a few angry people you are dealing with thousands, wake up before more damage is done to the TRNCs reputation.
