Turkish General Says

Postby halil » Tue Jul 31, 2007 11:27 pm

The Chief of the Turkish General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces General Yaşar Büyükanıt has said peace in Cyprus exists today thanks to the presence of the Turkish Armed Forces on the island.

General Büyükanıt’s words came at a reception given in Ankara to mark the 1st August Communal Resistance Day.

Responding to reporters’ questions during the reception, General Büyükanıt pointed out that the people of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is facing an international isolation, which has no legal basis.

Stressing that the Turkish Cypriot people had proved its will towards a solution at the 2004 referendum, the General said `in spite of all its advantages, South Cyrus failed to show the same will. But, it was the Turkish Cypriot People who was punished`.

He reminded that the Republic of Cyprus – which was established on the basis of 1960 Agreements – was destroyed by the Greek Cypriot Side but he complained that the Turkish people living in North Cyprus has been suffering for this.

`The international community should also accept this fact` he said.

Pointing out that the Turkish people are still being unjustly treated while those who did badness to Cyprus were put aside, the General said `I strongly condemn all those who see the Turkish Armed Forces – which has been protecting the lives and property of the people of the TRNC, as an occupying force in Cyprus`.

Explaining that the Turkish Cypriot people has been living in peace since 1974, he said peace in Cyprus exists today thanks to the presence of the Turkish Armed Forces on the island.

Are the infamous Turkish army, renowned for their atrocities over hundreds of years to MILLIONS of people, now going to change their tactics and become purveyors of peace?
I hope I live to see the day because I still suffer from the scars of their bombs and shells.
