Questions About Cyprus from a Student

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Lena,

I might have been over the top in telling Magazine to not use TRNC, etc., but I hoped in doing so that he wouldn't run into any problems with a small minority of GCs who might be very, very offended (and possibly angry) with something he said accidentally or innocently. It happened to me a couple of times when I was in Cyprus in 2003.

I'm glad you made it back to the homeland safely from the UK. 8) 8)

Makazine - I don't know where you can buy it cheapest. Try amazon.com
(Any one can answer this) In your opinion, what are the best places to visit in Cyprus. What is a nice place to have fun, and are there clubs and stuff like that? What Kind of music do y'all listen to? Pop, hip-hop, rock, indie, classical? I know this is a weird question, but are there a lot of snakes in Nicosia?
You need to visit Protaras and Agia-Napa
Many pops in Ayia Napa have fan they have good people in general.
If you rend a car go to champion rental is the best there.
They have many archaeological places to see and deep history.
PS If you are from Texas relly ... they have Texas pops in Limassol you can find tequila there.

and generally, how are minorities perceived?
When I say minorities, I mean black-americans or black people in general (non-caucasian).
Also, what kind of shoes are good to wear? And how safe is Nicosia?
Thanks for your help.
I think you will have fan in Nicosia it is a safe place just as it is in Texas
you need to live as close to the university as possible so you do not have to walk far. Buristack of good shoes is a must. I was teaching there for 6 months few years back and loved it and his people are very friendly I was living with African American friend she did not seam to have a problem there i was living in Platy area and she lived in Strovolos area. You need to avoid speaking politics on ether side because that can give you problems believe me on this... be safe have fan and focus on your purpose there... the food is very good there sheftallia is good and inexpensive
Hi Makazine,

I'm a fellow American who has been to Nicosia. There aren't a lot of African-Americans (or Black people in general) in Nicosia. I don't know how that translates into safety for you. If I were you, I would pick up the Rough Guide to Cyprus - http://www.amazon.com/Rough-Guide-Cypru ... 651&sr=8-1 - as well as Lonely Planet's phrasebook for Greek. I would focus more on learning some Greek phrases than on learning Turkish phrases. Also, try learning a bit about the "Cyprus problem" before you come. If you fly into Larnaca and do not cross the buffer zone (the Green Line), refer to the north as the "illegal occupation" to everyone you meet. They will mostly be Cypriots of Greek descent and will appreciate your choice of wording, and in turn, will build more rapport with you. Whatever you do, don't refer to the north as "Northern Cyprus" (with a capital "N"), the TRNC, or the "so-called TRNC." Just say the "illegal occupation in the north" with passion and you will score major points with most of the local people you meet.

Saying "the TRNC" or "the other Cyprus" is about as offensive to most of the Cypriots you will meet as saying "nigger" is to an African-American.

I'm in Philly right now, so pm me if you need to talk before you go. It's a domestic call.

Also, be careful: Cyprus is pricey for us. More expensive than Greece or Turkey.
Take this above advice to hart and do not go to the Northern Part as it is the illegal part of the country believe me you do not need to find out what i did.... that was not fan nor safe.
You need to keep out of politics and learn some Greek i will sagest to purchase and take with you the Rosetta Stone Level 1 at list and then also level 2 this will be equal to High School Greek you can find this on the Google serge.
Dear Mills I think from what you said to poor guy you scared him instead of help him...we are not like that you know. We do not expect everyone to know what is going on with the Cyprus problem...and we do not kill people because they didnt say occupied areas...Come on give us some credit.
Come on Lena go to the North and tell them they approach this problem of Cyprus in a wrong way and they live there illegally and you will find out what Mills is talking about. Mills is only trying to save our bro.
Hey, I'm about to go to work. Basically, I was selected out of a number of people in Houston by a company who wanted to diversify study abroad experiences for American students. One of the workers suggested I go to Cyprus. But that was not my original choice (I wanted to go to Switzerland). But I am glad I am going to Cyprus and Hopefully I have a great time.

As my time in Cyprus comes closer, I think I will have more question, so I really do appreciate all the repiles.
This was a very good selection makazine i hope you have fan my son is moving there with two families from the US. looking for residency there if you need any help let me know i will love to help you. My son in law is also African American living in Cyprus.

I know what you mean but really i didnt know that is offensive to call them colored. I really appreciate your lesson and your commnets are always welcome

By the way you are allowed to call me anything Kikapu  but not all the above you wrote
I would never call you anything bad Lena. Natty can testify on my behalf, that I treat ladies with love and respect.

These are good information to teach the kids in school, so that when they grow up and visit the USA, they will know what to say.

The other No No is, calling the Native Americans "Indians or American Indians" even though it is commonly used. But if you ever meet Native Americans face to face, do not refer to them as "Indians". These are white mans labels given to these great warriors.

Oh by the way, the word "whitey" is also offensive to the whites, which how some blacks call the whites in the States.

I know, you are saying to yourself, "my god, Political Correctness has gone crazy".
Very good also Lena if you call a black person collard in the States this will call you white trash as is much white paper trash in the streets in same states just some info....
