24% voted for the solution offered by the Annan Plan, Paliometoxo. These people were no fools. They are the best the Greek Cypriot community can offer. They are genuine peace lovers and true Cypriots who understood very well that sharing our country with the Turkish Cypriots is the only way for peace, stability and prosperity. All we need to do is to accept that the Turkish Cypriot community is politically equal to us and then solution will be easy. Turkey may not rush for it at the moment with the EU accession process moving so slowly but at least we will regain our credibility which has been lost due to the way Papadopoulos behaved prior and after the referendum.
Also, one mustn't forget that a big chunk of the 76% "no" vote belongs to AKEL. With AKEL slowly but steadily returning to its old pragmatic self (after the disastrous alliance with the most rejectionist forces) it could be that soon we may be talking about a new solution plan that will be based, of course, on bizonal, bicommunal federation, but which will address the genuine fears and anxieties of the Greek Cypriot community.
Papadopoulos did nothing for almost four years - after the referendum - and thus lived up to his image as a man who does not want solution. He is a keen advocate of the Dountas's dogma and he wrote on it in his newspaper before becoming President. The dogma says, in short, that we should push things until de facto partition is reached and then sit tight until the balance of power changes and then liberate our occupied parts. This myopic and dangerous position is fostered by Papadopoulos and when when Christofias was reminded of this five and a half years ago he said the infamous "the man has changed". Now that he realised (the hard way) that the man has not changed, he is seeking to remedy things. Let us hope it is not too late for Cyprus.
