Before you read my posts take a look at Ice Mans postings of photos from Cyprus in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They tell a LOT about us and how far we have come in a short time.

I've had a contemporary edition of that book for 2-3 years now on my bookshelf and can probably tell you the story behind every one of Thomson's photos.

I was fascinated. It was the first opportunity to see the whole book and the notes Thomson wrote of his travels and his impressions of the island. The neglect by the Ottoman autorities, the self reliance of the "natives" and their toughness which allowed them to survive are all there. I can see how the later success of Cypriots is owed to that toughness, which obviously must have been present way before 1878. Qualities of that kind do not surface from one day to the next.

Theodoulos Toufexis (our early 20th century photographer) has also put together a fantastic book of his life's work where, besides seeing many great photos, you'll read plenty of foreigner's accounts of the average Cypriot and his resilience in great detail. Fantastic reading and this is what prompted me to write about the natural selection process of Cyprus last year somewhere on the forum.

you forgot the armenian ,latins ,maronites ...collectively we are cypriots but divided according to our culture roots ,...

AND also the gypsies, blacks, those from the Middle East countries such as Lebanon, Egypt, Syria etc as well as the English - with considerable number of mixed marriages between all concerned. I feel we must add to that our latest guests from the Balkans, Russia, Pakistan/India etc who in decades to come will be part and parcel of the whole population as well as the culture!

that cyprus is an island which has a rich GREEK heritage to the point where it is a embarresment for me to me quote them ...and constantly repeat myself to you mortals .

to be honest bigoz ...i miss the cross nationalities of north london i miss the chinese and west indian cultures ...
