ARE GREEK CYPRIOTS GREEKS?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby pappy_sydney » Mon Aug 27, 2007 11:33 am

neo_cypriot your ideas are absolutely the ideas of a small minority who really dont know their own history or have any education. I too call myself Cypriot as well but thats because we were forced into becoming independent. We cant say we are Greek straight out as we are not part of Greece. We Cypriots are still Greeks and are proud of it and that is seen anywhere there are Cypriots....We still wave Greek flags, have the Greek national anthem, eat Greek food, sing Greek music, we celebrate Greek national independence day, ohi day etc etc etc.....Now Cypriots have differences with the mainlanders but everywhere there are differences....Rhodians and Cretans speak like Cypriots more than Athenians..does that make them less Greek? We Cypriots wanted enosis ( union with Greece ) but because of the geopolitical situation we couldnt have that and were forced to being an independent country. Now we cant enosis now and we have got used to being independent...That does not stop us from being GREEKS or love GREECE. When Cypriots say they are Cypriot that is just them being proud to say they are from Cyprus, its not an indicator they are not GREEKS.
The comment that Cypriots never thought of themselves as Greeks shows how uneducated you are....read some history and learn your own identity.
Its neo Cypriots like you who have an identity problem...Also of course Cypriots and other Greeks have other blood, thats the case for any people in todays Europe. This does not mean we are not Hellenes....I know alot of Cypriots in Australia and we are proud to be Greeks and wave the Greek flag as well as the Cyprus flag. Stop misrepresenting the vast majority of Cypriots who dont share your confused state...

The idea that the Cypriot dialect is incomprehensibleto Greeks therefore our language is not Greek etc is a non argument.

Mainland Greeks, with professor Babiniotis leading the way, have deliberately removed all musicality from the Greek language, with foremost the abolition of double consonants. ie Rossos (Russian) is now Rosos, with one S etc. This move has made all local dialects- Cypriot, Pontian, Dodecanese, Cretan, Corfiot which use double consonants seem inintelligible to the young of today. This bullshit situation has nothing to do with the Greekness of our dialect. People from universities elsewhere (like Sweden) record Cypriot dialect because it offers great clues as to the original Doric dialects of antiquity.

One more piece of interestng information. Tylliria supposedly took its name from a migratin of inhabitants of Tilos island. By coincidence the dialect closest to Cypriot is that spoken in Tilos, Rodos and nearby islands. And naturally it does not sound at all like Athenian Greek!

A personal note- I am half Greek (Dodecanese) and half Greek Cypriot. I too say that I am a Cypriot without the Greek because that is like saying I am Greek plus. I assume many Turkish Cypriots do the same for the same reason. To have been cut off the two mainlands for centuries yet retain your national character and identity is no mean feat, for either major community or any of the smaller communities of Cyprus. Salvation is not going to come from denying our national origins, rather the opposite is going to happen.

Does this mean I am pro Enosis. No, because I feel it is better for Hellenism if it did not happen. But that is another story. Like someone once said "there is a lot in favor of being small and independent!"

To try through education to modernise a suffered , by occupations, dialog and push same to be closer to the real and correct language must by a target in Gcs community. Fortunately the travelling latetly helped a lot in this regard. When i insist that we must remain Greeks I have in mind such things and not unions with Greece and other old stories. We must emphasise on our National routes, safeguarding our future which will request us to live in between 100milion Turks.

The damage in Cyprus sosiety is already there. I heard many Gcs saying " they the Turks and us the Christians" they are mixing nationalities with religions , they are mixing expressions, they stuck in expressing in their dialog because same is not a full language but pieces from around. How many times you saw an educated scientist (Gc who studied 7-8 years in UK to not be able to express himselve in his own launguage- this is a shame- this guides us to nowhere.

Pls pay attention to our chields 10-12 years old speaking in the streets- do you like what you here? -particularly in villages- they have no language but only express themselves by noices.

All these things happen because we mixed up our Nationality with the bad things happen in our country. We thereafter decided to change Nationality in order to fix the problem? Politicians are saying that they try to solve the problem and safeguard Gcs rights etc but they are looking to the tree and they lost the forest

you are so right ... you know i look all things through biblical view point and you are so right the Bible speaks of this things although many do not understand it or studied it ...
The Bible say that live is in the blood and the blood that is shat unjustly is still speaks. If you like to see for your self study the story of Abel and Cain.
So what i am saying the blood of all innocent Greek Cypriots speaks and one day all the world will know what is happen and happening to Cyprus. At the judgement time i will like to hear denktash try to justify him self at the presence of the almighty God for all the Cypriots that still speaking.

Its people like you who give Cypriots a bad name when it comes to narrow mindedness and only seeing what you want to belive. No matter how much information is shown to Cypriots about having Italian, French or DNA or anytoher background they still amnage to hide the fact that Cypriots are no the same as a Greek from Greece as they have different DNA. So if someone is half Greek and half Italia for an example. Does that still make them Greek? Ps. I know my history thanx. And I shouldn't expect anything less when it comes to rudeness or arrogance from someone like you because this site is crawling with people slagging each-other off and trying force their opinions. If you knew your history. Then you would know 1960 aint the first Cypriot independence. You only know that what has been allowed to be shown, not the whole story! Cypriots are simular to Greeks. But not the same. Not simular like someone from Crete is to someone in Athens. But more on the lines like someone from Spain is to someone to Mexico for an example. Also why do I see on this site a lot of Turks trying to prove a point when this is a site for Cypriots!

What I'm getting at is:

Being Cypriot is being proude of being from Cyprus

Not denying your other possible ancestry (Ecto Cypriot , Italian, etc.

Putting being Cypriot first before Greek or Turkish whatever your beliefs.

No more foreigne interference (including Greece or Turkey!)

Saying your Greek or Turkish only allows or gives power to Foreigners an excuse to intervine, etc!

Cyprus for the Cypriots!

So we are uneducated are we , dont know our history either , the fact that Cyprus WAS NEVER PART OF GREECE , escapes your attention. Listen mate , I'm so f..ng happy that we never achieved Enosis with your Greek mates , as a matter of fact I strongly beleive that those wanting Enosis should have been the mainland Greeks demanding Enosis with us the Cypriots . We have sweet fa to learn from them , their music is also our music and their food is also our food , but there again English music , American music as well as their culinary diets are also ours , and come to think of it a lot of Turkish and M.Eastern food is also Our food.
What is wrong with Cypriots , a nation that is seen world wide as an independent country embracing their own ethnicity . I'm a KIPREOS NOT KALAMARAS , and so are the overwhelming majority of well educated non brainwashed Cypriots.
LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS.
