ARE GREEK CYPRIOTS GREEKS?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

So lets be accurate and scientific about it...You seem to object us calling ourselves Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots...Why???

In "Greek Cypriot" Cypriot is the noun.Cypriot means "a native of Cyprus"...In "Greek Cypriot" Greek is an adjective. An adjective is a word used to modify or limit a noun...So Greek Cypriot is the perfectly accurate description of a Cypriot who speaks Cypriot Greek and might or might not be an Orthodox Christian...The same analogy goes for the phrase Turkish Cypriot...So tell us why you are really objecting to such an identity...????

A True Cypriot is a phrase we made up in jest in this forum...It means someone who was born in Cyprus,or has at least one parent born in Cyprus, who believes deep in his/her heart that Cyprus is her motherland, his spiritual home...Someone who believes that all Cypriots whatever their background are equal, with the same human rights and dignity.Someone who believes that Cypriots are one people and one nation, divided by one or two artificial (manmade) factors, with one common culture and common traditions and common personality traits and sense of humour etc...A True Cypriot believes that the only just and peaceful and lasting solution to the Problem is to put our Cypriotness above our ethnic origins and embrace each other as brothers and sisters in a democratic state based on human rights, equal opportunity principles, and the rule of law...Now why does this ring thousands of alarm bells in some people and places, who see the need to come and tell us we are not what we believe we are?????? :( :(
I agree 100% with all that you say BIR , dont be surprised if I decide to come over for a long weekend just to shake the hand of a true Cypriot !!
Welcome to the ranks of True Cypriots,theodore...

Our numbers are growing daily, and so will be the numbers of people who will tell us we are not what we believe we are...They will insist we must be Greeks or Turks above all...We will just have to stick our tongues out like this... :P :P :P

Hi Bir , planning my next trip to Cyprus for September 7th to Sep 11th. Will go to my village to pay tribute to the victims of the September 10th , 1953 earthquake , amongst them of course my mother . I think I will make it to Istinjo this time and will ask Kafenes to come too if he is free.
As you know I visited the "trnc" on my last visit and intent to do so again if my dear friend Halil is free to meet me at the check points and accompany me on a visit to that wonderful woman who is so dedicated to her noble cause in raising funds for cancer victims in that part of Cyprus , our Cyprus and our people.
Hope one day soon we shall together visit Paphos and Lefcosia and together pay our respects to all Cypriots who became victims of that horrible conflict that saw our island become divided , but I beleive that our people are closer now than they were 30 years ago and with so much in common we hope one day we will see our island united again.

How fortunate you are, dear miltiades, that you can visit our homeland frequently. When you are visiting you village, please remember that I too was there facing the forces of nature on September 10,1953. My father was teaching at Sarama (a stone's throw from Istinjo) and that was where we were on that tragic day...

Have no doubt that one day sanity will prevail, and we will have plenty of occassions to celebrate the reunification of our beloved country. Enjoy the Sheftalides with our friend Halil and have a drink for me too...Cheers

Can I point out again that that all ethnic groups are represented byu two communities. Not two ethnic groups representing all. All ethnic groups under the 1960 constitution of independence to choose which community they wanted to belong to.

All christians (Maranite, Armenian, and Latin) Cypriots all chose the Greek Cypriot community whiles Greek speaking people were made to be the Greek Cypriot community. All these groups apart from the Armenian Cypriots have intermingled at one stage in time mainly the Greek speaking , Latin and Turkish Cypriots you have many people in their communities who have gone from being one to the other.
