i often tell people ...just because we label ourselves civilised doesnt mean others have to behave like us ...

man ... i wish both TALAT AND PAPADOUPLOS ...GOOD LUCK ...BECAUSE I FEAR THE WORSE ....

Why do you feel you have to control anything. Should you not be in control of yourself and lead by example. You cannot control you can only guide.

What does civilised mean in your eyes...Does it mean the way you are behaving on this forum. You do not care what others think or feel and you shout and swear and piss people off. Is that civilised? You say you are a kick boxer...Does that not require restraint and controlled aggression. You are running around the forum like a loose cannon and you have a go at others for lack of discipline. The point of civilisation is to discuss and even argue. That is the way we move forward.

The point about Cyprus is that I have to agree with you and you are a bit late on that point. I said that many moons ago. That does not mean that the how should not be discussed and those that do not agree should not object.

Oranos,

Interesting that you work with peace missions yet you have "Si vis pacem...." as your motto. Is it your work that makes you so pessimistic? Reading your recent posts the inescapable conclusion is to give in and accept a permanent separation of our small island to avoid inevitable future conflicts. Sounds almost as if you want a big high wall to keep us apart because we cannot be trusted not to mangle each other. Well, that is one way of dealing with the problem.

There is another way, to enable the majority in each community, those that did not take up arms against each other, to take the responsibility of free citizens and prevent future clashes initiated by the "fascists of both cultures". That is how the French and the Germans did it, and no two European nations fought each other as often or with more feorocity than those two. If they can do it so can others. Basically it takes balls.

Fascists are those that belittle the other side. There is a difference between honoring yours and spitting on the other guy or wanting to obliterate him. That is one of my problems with the Turkish side, the obliteration of all signs of Greek presence in the north of the island. But in my book a stasfactory solution is not one where Turkish Cypriots are removed from Cyprus or their rights denied.

If you do build the big wall you will end up with two vast armed camps on either side. With more foreigners called in to help. On the other hand we could do what we did not do from the start: take ourselves seriously as a nation, and have one army that is strong enough to defend the island against all invaders. An army whose officers swear allegiance to the Cypriot flag, and all personell are Cypriots. And a policy of exploiting our strategic position for our interests and not those of anyone else. For example if anyone wants to listen in on what happens in central Asia then let us build the listening posts and sell them the information. We do not have to give them a base.

You live in the USA, as I hear it the US forbids any foreign base and armed foreign troops on its soil, even if they are there for ceremonial occasions, like the 25th March parade in Astoria. A rule like that in Cyprus might not be a bad idea.

As for the mines, in this day of missiles, the mines are not much use and in any case, their removal is obliatory under international treaties.

Nikitas thank you for your clear point. I agree with you 100%. It would be good if more people on this forum shared our point of view.

Cheers

Si Vis pacem,Para bellum...

I have no idea who said this, but just because it is in Latin it doesn't make it true. In my opinion it is a whole heap of cow manure... :)

If you want peace you have to work for it seriously. If you prepare for war that is what you will have eventually. I am not surprized in the least to learn that it is the motto of the US Marines... Look how much peace they have spread all over the world.

I am with Nikitas and humanist.

If you divide people and highlight their differences, you will never have peace...That is the sure way of perpetuating the animosity.

The only way to make sure you have lasting peace is to make friends-and if possible brothers/sisters- of your "enemy"...Then any dispute you might have between friends and relations can be solved amicably. But before you can do that you have to admit the past mistakes and injustices, allow people to find some sort of closure to their bitterness and resentment.Sincerely appologise and empathise with each other, and find the necessary compasion to forgive. The rest is easy.
But what are we doing in this forum and in real life???
Regurgitating the terrible past, accusing the other side for everything, and pledging revenge...Just the right recipe for a just and lasting solution... :(

Closure to the bitterness, good phrase. Perhaps we should find out how the Spanish got over their civil war, and how the French and Germans today are such close allies. And in Greece too, they had a civil war from 1945 till 1949 that cost 600 000 lives, and they got over it. It is doable.
