Thrill, I'm not a citizen but I do have a Cyprus ID card. Given that I'm an 'alien' married to a GC, I have the right to apply for citizenship after 3 years of marriage (so another year to go), but even then it requires an inordinate amount of form-filling to go through. Even though we plan to move back to Cyprus in a couple of years, I'm not going for citizenship because of the military service obligation which I see as a waste of time. Since I'm an EU citizen anyway, the whole national citizenship issue is irrelevant as once settled there I'm entitled to pretty much the same rights as a Cyprus national, albeit without the right to vote in national elections (which given the choice isn't really something I'm missing out on).

If you're interested in the process, the MFA has info on their website (address below).

thanks cannedmoose,

the proess doesnt seem half as bas as it is to apply for Greek citizenship. I dont think its possible for foreigners to obtain Greek citiznehsip unless through special circumsances.

I was thinking that it would be nice if me or one of my cousins could obtain CYpriots citizenship, since my grandfather has 5 daughters (poor guy!) who all married Greeks. So now not only does he not have anyone to carry on the family name, he has no one to carry on his ethnicity.

Hey brother,

I think it might be quite tough to rent unless you go to a Greek video shop in North London somwhere.

If you want, give me your address and i'll make you a DVD copy, if it copies :? I'm sure it should.

Just to add what other people have said, to my surprise i really thought it was going to be all about the aggression of the Turkish invasion. In contrast, it focuses alot more on the Greek national extremists for enosis and the plight of the GC people from the north.

I think in interviews with alot of the refugees at the time all the refugees seem to place the blame on the Greek national extremists. However, near the end the emphasis starts to turn of the ill treatment of the Turkish army. However, all in all, i was amazed that there was nothing derogatory said about the Turkish Cypriot community nor did it document their suffereing before or at the time.

What makes this documentary so good is it's cinematic style. Apart from the vintage cheezy 70's interviews, the cinematic sequences make it seem like a film.

If you're not already married Thrill, get your ass to Cyprus and marry a GC girl, there's your ticket to citizenship... oh, and enjoy cleaning the latrines for 6 months!
