The Pontians and the "I am an idiots"

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Kifeas » Sat Jul 28, 2007 6:20 pm

Regardless of what people may think about the last wave of “Pontian Greeks” that came over both in Greece and in Cyprus during the last 15 years from Caucasus, Pontian Greeks not only are not peasants of low IQ, but in fact on the average they seem to be smarter than mainland Greeks! Perhaps people do not know that super-intelligent artists in Greece, such as Chary Clin (Vasilis Triantafilopoulos) and Lakis Lazopoulos, are Pontian Greeks!

This is a racist discussion. It singles out people one the basis of their so-called 'race' and then assigns/attributes certain essential characteristics, invariably negative qualities - in this case low IQ - to that group. [The notion of IQ has been thoroughly rejected by creditable psychology, so god knows why it is being referred to].

How come the only Cypriot on Forbes' 2007 rich list (billionaires) is a Turkish Cypriot, Suat Gunsel ? (I'm assuming, perhaps wrongly, that the other named Cyprus citizen, John Fredriksen is not what most would call an indigenous Cypriot). How come Greece has only got 1 person listed (Spiro Latsis, 55th richest) whereas Turkey has got 25 person listed ? Oh, and your Russians around about 50. Is this massive personal wealth a reflection or a function of 'race' ?

A racist would conclude from this information that Greek Cypriots are idiots and the Russians are least idiotic because the former 'race' have the least accumulated wealth and the latter the most accumulated wealth.

But this would be daft (and offensive) : wealth is not a function of 'race' any more than intelligence is.

(By the way this is how Fredriksen is described by Forbes magazine "Last year shipping magnate gave up his citizenship in favor of tax-payer-friendly (and warmer) Cyprus last year. Son of Norwegian welder turned ship-brokering job as a teenager into control of the world's largest fleet of oil tankers, through flagship Frontline......"

Even though I perfectly agree with you that there is no correlation between IQ and Race, on the above comment I will add another perspective. The fact that there are way more Turks in the list of richest people, than Greeks, may also have to do with the unequal distribution of wealth among the citizens of a country; and this in fact is an indication of which society is more civilised than the other! What do you think?

We are talking about averages here, not for ALL. On the average the white Americans for example are less good athletes than the Black Americans. Is that racist I wonder?

@mrfromng

Thanks for the explanations my friend.
Could you please tell us why the settlers are called "I am an idiot"? So far no TC dared open his mouth, yet that's a reality isn't it?

Although such explanations don’t fall within the sphere of IQ but within the sphere of information let’s see if your IQ can process this: Placing tites is not a rocket science. Anyone can do it, there are only a couple of things you must be careful just to make the job right. On the average a GC technician will do the job perfectly with minimum material waste. On the average a Pontian will not do it so well, and an Asian will do worse.
It is not a matter of supply and demand. In fact all 3 of the above are hard to find and would only come to your house and do the job on weekends when they are not working elsewhere.

Now taking these averages into account RACISM comes into the picture when a really good Pontian who can do a perfect job cannot get as much money as a GC, just because everybody assumes his work will be of lower quality.

I am NOT talking about this although I agree pre-conceptions can lead to racism. I am talking for the pre-conceptions themselves. I don’t think the vast majority of Greeks or GCs who consider the Pontians (in general) of low IQ are wrong.

Now will you talk about that or will you continue hiding behind your finger. Tell us why the TCs call the settlers "I am an idiot".

It's not used for the TCs. It's used for the settlers. In fact they are called 3 names: a)Karasakalis, b)fija, and c) "i am an idiot". The first is equivalent to the GC word Kalamarades the second is Cypriot village language meaning seaweeds. (they came from the sea uninvided like seaweeds)

It seems you've been away from Cyprus for too long??

Kifeas,
I'd like to think, probably in agreement with you, that equality should be a mark of civilisation i.e, the more equitable a society is the more civilised we should think it is. Unfortunately (or fortunately) inequality has risen to its highest levels of disparity across all OECD countries, its highest level for over one hundred years in the US and UK in particular. And, on a global scale, income inequality is not only the widest it has ever been but the rate of divergence is faster than it has ever been.

Actually I think that the historical record shows that the more 'civilised' we become the greater the inequality that is produced.

I have not been away from Cyprus at all...I am a born bred Cypriot Turk from Limassol....I did spend a couple of years in UK back in the late seventies but ever since then i have always been in Cyprus..
Let me explain something for you..the "TC" i quoted on my previous answer was a typo mistake but we do amongst ourselves refer to them as TC's (TC) this is one of the names we call Turks from mainland...TC stands for Turkiye Cumhuriyeti..They dont like being called TC

Now we have other names for them which they dont like..such as Fija,Gaco,Karasakal but i dont recall anything that translates into "i am an idiot" :?
