PROTEST ACTION AGAINST PLANS TO BRING ELECTRICITY TO KARPAZ

Postby halil » Fri Jul 27, 2007 7:53 am

The Extendable and Sustainable Environment Platform has held another protest action in Nİcosia to protest the government’s decision to go ahead with plans to supply electricity to Karpaz.

During the action, protestors left black wreaths in front of the Prime Ministry, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Finance Ministry and Interior Ministry.

In a statement during the action, the Chairman of the Green Peace Movement Doğan Sahir said the Platform is in support of the development of the region, if the development is kept sustainable.

The protestors gathered in front of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources from where they walked to the Finance Ministry, Interior Ministry and Prime Ministry.

The action ended in front of the EU Coordination Centre.

The protestors laid black wreaths to the Ministries and the EU Coordination Centre.

They also handed a letter to officials at the Centre expressing their disappointment over the EU’s failure to finance the project to supply solar energy to the Zafer Burnu, which was declared a National Park.

The platform claims that bringing electricity to the Zafer Burnu National Park will attract constructors and investors to the area resulting in the destruction of the environment and natural beauties.

The platform says there is no needed to build a transformer in the area which is not a centre of population and that alternative energy sources, such as solar energy, could be used.
