Mining in Cyprus - environmental and human health effects

Postby CopperLine » Wed Jul 25, 2007 3:33 pm

I'm interested in the history of mining in Cyprus, especially of the old mine workings near Lefke, both pre-1974 and after.

Are there any Forum members who have knowledge of the mining operations, the environmental consequences and the history of labour organisation in and around the mines. I'm not particularly interested in seeing this through the lens of a GC/TC division, though I acknowledge that it does have some bearing on the problems and benefits accruing from mining.

The book Journey through Cyprus has a wonderful chapter on mining and its effects in the 1960-1970s. It's a great read in any event!

Mining in Cyprus

The Moufflon bookshop in Nicosia has some particularly good reference books on geology and mining in Cyprus. - There's one in particular - The Mining and Mineral Resources of Cyprus - got a light blue cover and should be on the top shelf immediately to the right as you go through the door.

If you need to know anything specific I'm quite happy if you PM me.
