BigOz I always thought the total of seats were 560. The above result only shows 550. Was i wrong?
You said in the previous elections Erdogan had 363 seats. But if it were so then he had exactly 2/3rds no? So why he couldn't elect Gul for president? (it is 2/3rds that he needs, no?)

Who you think he is going to cooperate with to pass the constitutional change for election of president directly from the people?

The results were good for a future settlement of Cyprus I believe, because the new government still has the goal to enter the EU and will make gradual changes in their laws and same time improve their economy. I think this also plays well with the opposition party who are the wealthy elitist, so they have something in common to work together. The scarf issues will be buried in no time. This leaves the Military and the Nationalist , a very minute of the 70+ million Turks to fend for themselves. Give it one or two more elections as the ones yesterday, then the military and the Nationalist will become history, as far as having any political say in Turkeys future to move further and further to the West and into the EU. Turkey will need to give up her bargaining chip to enter the EU, and that is the Northern Part of Cyprus, aka, the "TRNC".

I would like to get Bir's and BigOz's take on the Turkish elections.

I am afraid it is not at all like your interpretation above! Below is the table of new parliamentary seats:
Image

As can be sen the MHP (Nationalist Party) had doubled their votes and managed to become the third party with 71 seats in the parliament (from no seats in the last election I believe)!

The ruling AK party had their seats cut from 363 to 340.

I doubt these results will change the general loss of interest and will to join the EU by the Turkish public, especially when you consider other main news of the day showing the Turkish lira gaining more value against the dollar, Tourism levels reaching new record high, interest rates falling further...etc

Ironically, one of the main car manufacturers in Turkey TOFAS has given their workers 3 weeks holidays and closed the factory for maintenance! I wonder if any car manufacturers in EU could afford the same?

BTW I just noticed Pyrpolizer's post after posting this one. I do not agree that TCs do not like Erdogan. I personally never doubted his abilities especially where the economy is concerned. By the same token, I protest strongly any suggestion that there is a Junta in Turkey :D
How can you even suggest that in the light of the fully democratic elections that has just taken place, and the will of people has prevailed?

Well,my take on the elections is not much different to bigOz's.
Although the akp lost 20 seats they gained more than 10% more votes. This will give them more confidence and more of a mandate to push their reforms on religious grounds...The presence of the MHP will somewhat complicate things when it comes to Cyprus...I see Erdogan finding it harder to make any compromises on Cyprus...The most welcome aspect of this election is the representation of the Kurdish people with more than 20 MPs,enough to give them party status in parliament...
I suspect the Kurdish MPs will use Turkey's Cyprus policy to demand more autonomy for their people...The military will be very much on edge, and watching Erdogan more carefully than ever...I see nothing positive in this election regarding Cyprus I am afraid,Kikapu...Erdogan will need a few more terms, and full support of the EU and the USA to come anywhere near having the courage to stand up to the military...
So in the short run nothing will change...in the long run there is some hope for Cyprus after this result...But anything can happen in Turkey including an army coup, now that Kurds will have a voice in parliament...We live in interesting times... :)

Oh paliometexo, will you ever give up your one sided quotes just to have the last word for God's or Allah's or holy Cow's sake?

The UN are well aware that the Turkish military had done for 33 years what they could not do for the 11 years prior to that when they had to do it! Namely prevent the bloodshed and war between the two communities. Hence they probably feel a subconscious gratitude if anything for someone else doing their job!

As for the UN forcing anyone to do anything, I guess the reasons are the same as those when they had the white UN tanks and turrets facing the Turkish enclave in Famagusta, whilst it was being bombarded for days by the GC mortars during 1974! Or perhaps same as those when they stayed out of the way while Grivas and EOKA-B attacked the Turkish villages between 1964-67...

This is not your land it is our land. We did not want things to end up here but the unending aggression directed at us to hand this island to Greece and the ongoing aggression of the GC leadership mandates us to protect ourselves in a seperate zone (as also foreseen by the U.N.). The fact is we have our own country and by defintion of the word of "nation", we are a nation of this country, as you are a nation of the RoC due to the status quo. We will become communities if a settlement is reached once again. However, it is very unlikely that you will ever accept to become a community in the RoC for reasons I have elaborated elsewhere.

Well sorry but I don't accept your claim that my own village/home and lands are yours, neither the ECHR accepts your claim neither anyone. It's just one of your sensless claims. So there goes your basic argument claiming you are a nation sharing a common geographical region. You just grabbed something and you have a gorilla protecting you and your loot. That's all.

As for your claim that you never wanted it to end up like this and everything is due to the GC agreession, who you think you are kidding? Were you aiming at taksim and were you waiting for the Turkish ships and planes to come and take half of Cyprus, yes or no? The fact is you were always planning it and you finally MADE IT. So the fact is you always wanted it to end up like this. So if the Gcs are guilty of trying unsuccessfully to make illegalities, you are guilty for actually MAKING THEM, and still doing them.

There is only one thing you haven't predicted though. Look around your open prison to find out what it is.

It is not up to your decision for me to live in security or for me to exist on this island as the TC people. The illegalities and the crimes directed at us has made it necessary that we have our own space. That is why the U.N. adresses the problem by giving us a seprate zone and so does the rest of the world. The fact that the final settlement has not been reached does not change the reality that we still need our own space in the mean time to live securely and the inevitable outcome. You can kick and scream all you want this is the bottom line and it will stay that way, with perhaps some minor adjustments. The crimes of the GC side is ten fold against us and they are still ongoing. Just because you have a better leverage in world politics does not change these facts.

Turkey and the TRNC have a military alliance which serve the interets of both countries. If you want to find nametags for this by all means please to do so as it will concern no one but you. To us they are heroes and saviours whom we adore and feel proud about.

I am freely, proudly and happily living in my country: TRNC, as a member of its nation. You are always welcomed to visit and get a sense of the realities here for a change over the propaganda and the lies you are spoon fed in the illegal adminitration in the South. Are there hardships in TRNC? As with any oher country, yes. And I am doing all within my power to overcome them, like the rest of my people. Make no mistake about it: we will prevail!

No,the total seats were always 550,Pyro gardash...
They defeated Erdogan on a technicality...The opposition parties insisted that there should be 367 MPs present in parliament for the vote to be valid for President...And since they boycotted the sittings, and AKP only commanded 363 votes, the matter went to the constitutional court which ruled in favour of having 367 MPs present for presidential elections..If that vote had not been declared invalid,Gul would've been elected in the 3rd round where only a simple majority of those present wouldve sufficed...(2/3 of 550 is 367 I believe)....

The constitutional change to elect the President by the people has already been passed and approved by the Court....It will now go to a refererandum to be approved by the people...If they want to elect the president before that, they need to find 367 people to come to parliament for the vote...This time they might find that magic number if the Kurdish members would oblige.....

Ha,ha,ha Here's a new joke "we will prevail"

Prevail over who man? The settlers?
you have not prevailled for 30+ years and you will prevail from now on? When you cannot even survive one week without Turkeys packages? When just one year ago you almost got bankrupt from complete electricity failure? Yes man you will prevail, you will become Taiwan and China. Fix your electricity first.

And don't turn green everytime you visit the free areas, the European place thats breaks your heart to watch from a distance. Just light your cabaret flag on the mountain and sigh YOU TOGETHER WITH YOUR LIKES.

You can keep flattering yourself for the crimes you have accomplished over us, it`s apparently more convenient than feeling ashamed of them.

You look at those mountains and you look at them very carefully: they are the symbol of our existance, which you tried to end and still do, carved in stone. We will prevail over your illegalities and crimes and will continue to exist freely and securely in this Island. Deal with it.
