Just for the record ...... I never intimated that Qantas flew into Cyprus. I merely pointed out that their safety record is unblemished - quite an achievement I think! :)

The last time I flew out of Beijing there was a terrible snowstorm and I was convinced that we would never be able to take off.

At the time, the trip to the aircraft (Air China Boeing 747-400) was in one of those articulated bus things but the bus driver couldn’t find the right aeroplane. We spent ages going round and round the apron with the bus driver stopping at each likely looking aircraft and asking its destination.

Do I win the prize for the longest journey from departure lounge to aircraft?

Incidentally, we did take off despite the need to sweep snow off of the wings. Once aboard we watched the same Air China safety film which proclaimed “Air China velly safe ailine never lose airplane” despite having dumped several of their airbuses into the ground over the previous couple of years. Next time I went back about six months later the movie still claimed they’d never had an accident…

Another interesting Air China ‘feature’ was that, in spite of being in the upper deck no smoking business class section of the 747-400 everybody lit-up (including the captain) as soon as the wheels left the ground.

One of the reasons for Quantas safety record is that the most dangerous stages of flight are take off & landing. Quantas only fly long haul and pro rata do far fewer take offs & landings per flying hour than other airlines.
