More refugees will return if ...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

More refugees will return if ...

Postby Piratis » Sun Feb 20, 2005 12:59 pm

Most refugees will return home if:

1) TC state is the 29% of the island and 33% of its population is allowed to be GCs

or

2) TC independent state is 18% with no refugees returning in that 18% (but would be able to return in an additional 11% of the island under GC admin).

I just wonder.

Piratis,

I've already done the math on that ...

With a TC state at 29% and 33% right of return, ALL refugees would have the right of return. (think about it: 33% of the population would be nearly 100,000 individuals + all those who would return under GC administration.)

With an 18% TC state and no right of return in the north, MANY refugees would not have the right of return (all those who used to live in the 18%). Also note that many refugees lived in Kyrenia and the surrounding villages, and these regions would still not be returned even with an 18% arrangement.

I was not talking about the theoretical right to return. I am talking about how many will return.

Magicthrill, it was a question.

Alexandre, can you tell us specific numbers for the people that will have the right to return based on Annan plan and your proposal.

More refugees will be able to return if more settlers are repatriated!

Annan plan as it stands discourages people from returning due to its provisions, even though theoretically it allows everyone to return under very strict conditions.

Ok i think i finally understood what you said. Do you mean that the additional 11% of land that will be returned to the RoC will be set aside for the GC refugees?

The refugees that used to live in the 18% of land returned (currently Turkey occupies about 36%), will return to their homes. The rest will get an equivalent TC property the same way that TCs will get an equivalent GC property in their country.

I didn't mention any kind of plan here actually. You probably talk about a proposal I made in another thread.
In any case, this can be done with actually less people deprived of their original homes compared with the Annan plan.
If by "forced exchange" you mean settlers that currently live in a part of Cyprus that is going to be returned, then yes, those will have to move into the TC country.
