Cyprus status

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Cyprus status

Postby aapapa » Wed Jul 18, 2007 6:53 pm

Cyprus is now a full member of the European Nation. Does anybody in Turkey, no, the World really think that Cyprus will act alone, assuming it had the power, ignore its European partners and attack Turkey? That will in fact mean that the EU is attacking Turkey. That is not realistically going to happen. Is it? So what is Turkey afraid of. Why do so many Turks and Greeks for that matter, harp back to what happened 30, 40, 50 years ago. Let's face it. That is all water under the bridge. If that was not so then the EU was not going to happen, re WWII and for the same reason the USA would not be trading with Japan.

aapapa, Welcome to the forum and best wishes, must say I don't get your point when you ask ''What is Turkey afraid of ?''.

It would appear that they are afraid of nothing.

I think he is trying to say why Greeks and Turks on this forum constantly go on about what happened years ago (i'm guessing 1974 period) when it is 'water under the bridge' ..

Kristianikos, then surely he should be referring to G/C and T/C ?, that seems to make more sense to me.

TRUST...the scares are deep and neither side feel they can trust the other and therefore make demands which are seen as being unreasonable or unnecessary.

They must be afraid of something. You don't keep 40,000 troops to "protect" at best 200,000 people, ratio 1 soldier to 5 people when facing you is an army of what 10, 15 thousand without air or sea support. I am guessing  that their presence in Cyprus has nothing to do with either he TC's or the GC's.

Absolutely right. It seems to me that both Greeks and Turks are so preoccupied with looking back all the time it's really a miracle how we manage not to trip ourselves more often.

I would prefer to just use the term Cypriots for whoever lives here. Don't forget that there are many, many people here from various ethnic groups who have adopted Cypriot nationality. However I was using Greeks and Turks to distinguish between the two main ethnic groups which live here, ie Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
