Cost of living in Cyprus

Postby Maccy » Wed Jul 18, 2007 12:11 pm

My husband and I are looking for some realistic advice about the cost of living in Cyprus. After a visit to Paphos last year we've been dreaming about relocating, but are unsure whether we can realistically afford to do it... I would be able to telecommute from home for the company I currently work for, but I will only be earning the equivalent of CYP800 per month. For at least the first year we will have to support ourselves on my salary alone. My income will have to pay our rent, food, transport, bills, etc etc. We don't have children, just a dog. From looking at a couple of websites it seems we would be able to rent a house for 300 - 400 per month, but I'm struggling to get an idea of how much a weeks grocery shopping costs, medical insurance, transport, broadband and all the nasty little expenses that keep on adding up. Whilst we are prepared to live fairly basically we don't want to end up having sleepless nights worrying about paying the bills! Are we being totally crazy even contemplating such a move??!! Any advice and suggestions from those who have already made the move would be more than welcome.

it's possible but you will certainly be struggling. What about transport? Electricity is not cheap either, specially for heating and cooling.

KAFENES BRO ...THEY LIVE IN THE UK ...EVERYTHING BUT FOOD IS CHEAPER HER ...THE PROBLEM THEY HAVE IS WAGES ARE LIKE 1/5 OF BRITAINS ..AND THE COST OF LIVING IS RISING

MACCY ....REALISTICLY SPEAKING ...THE INCOME ,A SINGLE PERSON NEEDS NOW IN CYPRUS TO SURVIVE ..IS £800-£1000 A MONTH ...THIS INCLUDES RENT ,FOOD ,SERVICES AND EXTRAS ...THIS IS A REALISTIC AMOUNT ...I DREW UP BY SPEAKING TO 35 DIIFFERENT FAMILIES AND DRAWING A AVERAGE

THE COST OF LIVING IN CYPRUS HAS GONE UP 200% IN 10 YEARS

THANKS TO RISING LAND COSTS AND FOOD AND SERVICES ..IN SHORT ...LIFE HERE IS AS COSTLY AS UK LIFE ..BUT WITH LESS INCOME ...THE FIRST 2 YEARS ARE HARD ...YOU NEED £30000 SAVED UP
YOU WILL SPEND £10000 EASY IN THE FIRST YEAR ON COSTS ... - TO ENJOY LIFE

YOU NEED TO EARN £15K A YEAR TO LIVE COMFORTABLY .-

The most expensive things out here are CAPS lock buttons. Luckily I know a man who knows a man who got me one cheap ;)

We are an average family 2.4 ( 2 adults and 2 children) children & a dog, so i can give you a rough estimate of costs. Ok these will obviously be a bit less as there are the 2 of you, but i like to always over extimate things so i never fall short. Food i spend on average 60 a week, the phone bill is an average 40 for both the house and my mobile, and i call England quite a bit as my parents and friends are over there. Electricity come to about 30 every 2 mnths i think it is. Health insurance to cover the basics will set you back about 25 pounds a month each. You can get a government health card as we are now in the EU, you need to get a form from the post office over there before you come over. Rent will be about 400-500 , depending where you are looking and what you are looking for. You can find a nice appartment in Limassol for that much, but im sure you might find a house with that kind of money if you look around. Transport in the public sence is pretty much non existent. The Taxis are plentiful, and they dont charge that much, but dont rely on buses. To buy a car is a bit pricy compared to England, but road tax and insurance is definately cheaper. I pay about 30/40 pounds a year for the roadtax on my Nissan Micra. Insurance is 100 a year, now that i am over 25. As for dog, needs to be microchipped and have all jabs. Dogs also need to be registered with governemnt vets. Chip cost me 40, jabs cost 25 for the first 2, and registration is 5 pounds.

Maccy, Welcome to the forum, sorry to be a little negative here but I DO think you will be struggling beyond endurance if you arrive in the condition you indicate.

Good Luck and best wishes to you nonetheless. :)

Alienware is a ripoff as you know... not worth the "reliability" and speed taking in consideration depreciation on PCs these days.
