There are elements of it that I agree with but some it is scary. the notion of this is our country our nation our land, is very scary in that it attempts to separate and segrate people into them and us. I would like to know who falls within the category of "our". The Chinese community have been in Australia since the 1800's with the gold rush, would that make a descendant of the then Chinese part of the "our country"? or is Australia simply reserved for the white Anglo saxon, who speaks ONLY english. Or are the descendants of the first Cypriot Australian to have arrived in the 1850's and the first Cypriot Australian Walter Ionas who arrived in Adelaide in 1883 considered as part of the "our".

Don't be fooled people John Howard is one of the most racist ultra nationalist prime ministers Australia has ever seen, his intrnsigent attitude about migrants has made quite a lot of people such as myself feel excluded from maistream society, despite the fact that I have worked since I was 15 years of age, put my self through university twice, paid for my education and paid my tax, for some so called Australian to be bludging off on unemplyment benefits for years. ABS statistics have repeatedly shown that apart from Indigenous Australians the second group receiving unemployemnt benefits are the so called Australian, probably carrying the name Smith and not Georgiou or Katasoglu.

I honestly think you have the wrong end of the stick here. I doubt very much if people like you and Birk is what was in his mind when making that speech.
I'm also an immigrant in the UK . I would not feel threatened if a UK politician was to make a similar speech here in the UK. On the contrary I would welcome such sentiments and applaud loudly. The culture that the immigrants came from is not the culture of the West. The Western world culture is the property of the people of the West and those joining the West must either accept or reject it, but they can not demand that theirs must be adopted by the West. Parts of our culture might be seen by some immigrants as offensive to them .TOUGH LUCK . They have a perfect option in the democratic West , exercise it and shut up.

Sorry ,dear miltiades, but humanist is pretty much spot on in his analysis...
John Howard and his government, in 10 short years, have managed to turn the race and community relations back 50 years in Australia...The mateship, tolerance, and fairgo principles which was such a proud part of Australianness have been disposed of by this white supremist and racist biggot, which resulted in national action type riots in Sydney (Cronulla beach riots) where drunken Anglo thugs proceeded to beat up everyperson of Mediterranean appearance...Me,you or humanist would not have stood a chance had we be unlucky enough to be on that beach that day...Anti-muslim sentiments are being whipped up in Australia these days because this cowardly Howard government wants to scare people out of their wits to reelect them in the coming general elections...

I wondered what Aboriginal Australians thought about the above quoted comments by white politicians...."You bloody hypocrits....did you assimilate with us when you came here a mere 200 odd years ago...did you respect our values and way of life???You didn't even consider us human beings, you despicable creatures!!!" would not be far off from their thoughts...Sad but true...

Good post Bir.

Howard has indeed ruined Australia; a trend evident from his first term even which is what made me abandon Australia. Now I'm just sorry I didn't come to Cyprus earlier so I guess I owe him one! :)

Unfortunately the masses are racists due to their lack of education and their inability to predict that racism has the potential to wipe us all out because we are all imperfect and cannot satisfy a single mould! :(

Once they eliminate the Arabs/Muslims they will then turn on the Mediterranean people (Spanish/Greek/Italian), and then on the next "imperfect" group until there's nobody left standing. Such is the vicious cycle of racism; it's like a battle royal of imperfections.

People like Miltiades, despite his ripe old age, isn't too worried right now about saving his own skin because he is not the current target but once he becomes the next target he will swiftly change his tune and start complaining albeit too late!

I am not equating the laws of the country with that of Sharia laws at all. I am suggesting that they had made their point about those people who do not agree with the law of the country to ship out and I support that. However the rest of the article goes on about people learning english and assimilating etc etc etc. The tone of the article is iis suggestive that all migrants are not adhering to state law. Furthermore the article keeps stating this our country and this is our land you are welcome to live here if you live in peace. Well that does not allow me to that it is my country nor my land. It makes reference to Australians, what does that actually mean being an Australian, is an Australian someone who is of an Anglo saxon background and who is fourth generation Asutralisn but has no connection or respect for the land or is someone who is a first generation Australian of a Cypriot background with strong connection and respect of the land and believes in curbing overdevelopment and keeping nature and going solar power in all to save the land. Stops buying gadgets and using materials that are bad for the environment. My so called Australian neighbours have not use a greens waste bin for three years since I lived next to them nor a recycling bin

I think the Australian government has got it absolutely RIGHT.

They have always exhibited the good sense to avoid the mistakes other nations have made, they watch and learn, that is why they have such a loyal and progressive attitude, straight, Good On 'Em mate. :)

a little bit too late Eliko...we are slow learners...

I come from Melb and when you have 1 suburb with 5 mosques, walking distance to each other...something is not right...Broadmeadows as it is known , has become a ghetto...Its a different bloody country...Sharia law alll over the join...you see it and live it...The PM is correct in what he said.

What about the last mufti when he claimed women ask for trouble because the way the dress...He equate it to the dogs, men, and uncovered meat....What about muslims screaming our laws are biased...what about muslims have more rights to Australia because they paid to get over....The mind boggles with these muftis and their brainwashing...A anormal government high school in Moreland was closed down for becoming islamist...

Try and buy pork products, ham, bacon etc in Broadmedows...you got no hope...everything is blessed with Halal, in order not to offend, down to the kit kats...how about the word halal offending others...do they care?...fucking NO...The mayor is Turkishm a muslim, and he forbidden ham and bacon from the cafeteria...A public place mind you...

The PM is right, either you fit in or you are out...just wishing he started earlier, like 20 years earlier...

Do you live here Eliko?

Just because it does not affect me personally that does not mean that I cannot speak about the injustce of the country I live in.

Having said this I feel more excluded in Australia today than I did 25 years ago as a new migrant.

Pitsilos am the star at my workplace and loved by all my colleagues however when they make generalised statements about Lebanese, it is constant reminder that I am not angl saxon, yet they are happy to suff themselves with lebanese take away, when John Howard and his cronies go obout migrants ought to do this and that I feel that I am not accepted for my difference and what I can bring to this country.

I do not agree with fundamentalism of any sort whether it is Muslim mufties making inappropriate coments or christians making coments like " of course she is Christian and she will go to heaven" etc. Or when I hear comments like oh but your different Andreas I don't even see you as a migrant. What the hell does that mean?

I would argue that I am more Australian than many so called Australians

TWO ISSUES HERE ...it is well documented that AUSTRAILIA ..is a fast becoming facist state ..."if you aint white ...you aint allright" ...mainy immigrants who get on with life there are treated absurdly .......couple of years ago ...arabs got into fights with white austrailians on the coast ...cant remember where ...so the white ozzies decided to beat up everyone looking dark haired ,GREEKS,ITALIANS ..EVEN OTHER WHITE OZZIES .
also from what i understand ...immigrants cannot apply for certain jobs ...." white only "

but this move is the right move ...of only the U.K etc did the same ...
clearly if the country you live in is not for you and your beliefs and state are opposites then move ...

i think in years to come this will be the only choice ...i dread a future attack on british and U.S Soil ..
