GCs Learning Turkish/TCs Learning Greek | Pyla TCs

Postby Leon » Mon Jul 16, 2007 6:57 pm

Hi.

Do any of you know of any Greek Cypriots learning Turkish or Turkish Cypriots learning Greek? Are you yourself learning the 'other' language? If so, what are the reasons for learning the 'other' language? Also, are there any elderly Greek Cypriots who speak Turkish from pre-1974 period (I know a lot of Turkish Cypriots (used to) speak Greek)?

Secondly, I have a random question about the Turkish Cypriots in Pyla - where do they do their schooling (and where do the youths learn their Greek, as I'm assuming they do know the language?)? Do they attend schools/colleges on the Greek-speaking side or the Turkish-speaking side? Do you think that the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots in Pyla do much intermingling or are they fairly segregated despite getting on together well?

Leon.

That's interest. I am soon to get in the throws of learning Turkish and I have also realised the governmental job opportunities of its knowledge. On a second basis, however, I would like to learn the language because it is one of the two official languages of my country.

g'day Leon I do not speak Turkish though I would love too. I find the language to be so pleasant to my ears. May be one day soon. However both my grandfathers now dead. Both spoke limited Turkish and certainly my paternal grandfather taught us some words and sentences but that was a long time ago over 25 years. Forgot everything :(

My Nicosian, Greek-speaking grandfather (pre 1974), of blessed memory, spoke Turkish proficiently.

Hi Leon

I am GC and I am trying to learn Turkish but I haven’t attend to proper classes to be honest but through dictionaries notes from a teacher, Turks and TC friends. By the way as Halil said in an older thread we both have words from Turkish and Greek and we don’t even know it.

English please...will be a way to improve your English as you said are not 100% good.

I want to learn because my country has 3 languages. Greek which I have been learning since I was born, English which I have been learning since I was 7 I think, and Turkish which I have been learning for few months.
Is that enough for you or you need more...I have some more reasons if you want to listen...but let me ask why you were so interested in my reasons?
