A MAN who admitted to beating his wife after a row at work yesterday wanted to shake the hand of a judge who let him off with a suspended sentence and a £300 fine.
Ekrem Karadayi, 52, from the Turkish occupied village of Elia, admitted to the single charge of attacking his wife on July 10 this year and causing her injuries in the Nicosia village of Astromeritis.
According to the state prosecution, the defendant had had a blazing argument with his wife Cigdem at the building site where they both worked.
At one point, his wife decided to walk away from him, fuelling his anger.
He then grabbed hold of her and slapped her several times in the face.
Yesterday, Karadayi was in the dock and could not sit still, continuously getting up and down in his seat and saying: “It was only my wife. I love my wife”.
He continued mumbling as the judge read out the sentence to the court.
He was initially taken aback when the judge announced that he would jail him for four months and began thumping his own chest.
But he broke out in to a smile when Judge Angelos David added his sentence would be suspended for a period of three years.
The judge also ordered the defendant to pay a £300 fine.
The delighted Karadayi then wanted to shake the judge’s hand before police officers stopped him.
Walking out of the courtroom escorted by three policemen, Karadayi shouted, “Thanks mate!”
