No doubt there will be a greater imbalance in the rich v poor. Education, education, education is needed. But no doubt the rich will ensure education takes a back-stage.

totally agreed...very different cases...Indians are one of the most lovely and respectable people on earth...this happens only in few villages where ignorant, poor people live...Im sure things will change soon..

But Karma how can this be a few villages? 10,000,000 girls in 20 years Thats half a million girls a year!!! Hitler did 6,000,000 Jews in 5 years.

DT; Please dont shoot the messenger. The figure however small or large are terrible. It is easy for statisticians to take any figures and manipulate to suit their own purposes. You can get a mean average and get one result or take a sample area and multiply it 'n' time to cover the whole of India giving very different results. The min point is that it happens and how do you stop it? Can anyone?

Get rid of the sexist dowry system for a start, I've enjoyed 41 years of marriage, a dowry would have only been a financial incentive to marry someone just for their money.
BTW are dowrys still paid in Cyprus?

Dowries and the caste system are now - "supposed" to be illegal anyway, BUT it will take many many years before it is in reality no longer in use. There is also the problem of the young brides being killed after a few years so that the man can marry again and get another dowry, these killings are usually in the form of domestic "accidents" involving the sari being caught alight whilst cooking on a kerosene stove. maybe in years to come these acts of murder will just be bad memories - I hope so..........

Twinkle, thats a very good point about the eventual imbalance of the sexes. I read an article about Afghanistan when the Taliban were in control, and it was like this:

Women can longer work
women get sick
Male doctor not allowed to treat women
No women doctors - not allowed to work
Woman dies.............

They will have to practice 'Polyandry' then. That will aid keeping the population down surely.
