The first rule of dog training is to train the owner. It is useless having a third party doing it. My best advice is to get and read The Dog Listener and The Practical Dog Listener before attempting anything.

Our present dog caused us many headaches. We tried two pro trainers both with and without us. One said he was "headstrong and wilful"; the other said he was the first dog he had come across that he considered untrainable. We started using Jan Fennell's techniques after reading those books. He is now reasonably well trained; he can walk to heel, sit, lie, stop barking. He is still reluctant to come, though, unless he feels like it. The other day, I was working outside the garden and had accidentally left the gate open and the dog escaped into the road. As soon as I saw him, 10 m down the road, I said, "sit!" and he immediately sat. I walked up to him and said, "To heel!" and he walked back with me into the garden. According to the expert, who suggested we had him put down, this is the untrainable dog! I admit it was not easy, but Fennell's technique does work.
