Moving my business to Cyprus

Postby craigbeck » Fri Jul 13, 2007 10:54 am

Hi all,

I am a newbie around here............... We have just bought a house in Pyla and intend to move over in 2009.

I am a photographer in the UK and I am planning to set up a wedding photography business in Cyprus. Does anyone know how easy/difficult would that be.

Have the locals got this market sewn up?
Would I struggle to get work?

Any help is great

Setting up a business is easy, getting customers is another matter.

I found advertising gave a limited response and word of mouth is the best.

It took me two years for my business to become successful, so think along that time scale and bring plent of money with you.

Good luck

As most of the marriages are Greek Cypriot, I would say that a good working knowledge of Greek would be essential. You would also need to know all the phases of a Cypriot wedding, which can be a long affair, sometimes lasting >24 hours. Don't forget, also, that there may be 3,000 guests. Something totally different to UK weddings. I suggest you Google "cyprus wedding" to get some hints.

If you are up to it, DVDs of the whole day's ceremonies would probably be more profitable than photos. You would need at least three cameras/operators (moving locations) with pro sound equipment and pro NLE equipment/software.

craigbeck, there are some excellent photographers in Cyprus, there is also plenty of work for them since the Cypriot people are very fond of recording family events.

I think you may face a measure of difficulty initially as the locals are inclined to be a little cliquey when it comes to such issues of photography.

Test the water yourself by visiting some of the studios, you may well be able to see an opportunity by so doing.

Welcome to the forum, good luck with your ambitions, hope it all works out well for you. :) :) :) :) :)

Hi Craig
I am a heating engineer and I am firm in the belief that you really need to be a 'one man band'.
if you can work for a few companies while you find your feet all the better.

It's great living here and it's even better if you only have you and yours to worry about.

Hi Craig,
We're getting married in Paphos in 8 weeks time and we're using a local photographer.

When we were looking we found about three that were recommended and having spent time with them there was little difference in the quality and options they offer but all said they were packed over the summer months as the wedding business in Cyprus booms.

It seems to us that the wedding business is going to be good business for the future, good luck!

By the way, we're hoping also hoping to move to Cyprus after the wedding/ early 2008... anything to get away from the depression that is the UK!!!
