Cyprus - What are we - European or Middle eastern?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Cyprus - What are we - European or Middle eastern?

Postby Nickp » Wed Feb 16, 2005 12:44 pm

Hmmm, the age old question with my friends.

Is Cyprus middle eastern or European. Okay, here's the facts, i think Cyprus is more in the middle east than Europe. Most of us are really dark, even darker than most Arabs! And Cyprus itself does not really look like anything from Southern Europe apart from maybe Crete and Rhodes and western Turkey.

On the otherhand, the GC's have a Greek culture that originates from the European mainland. Were in the EU, and have a democratic stable government with high standard of living. Finally, all our links are with Europe, in terms of business and visitors, we have very little to do with the middle east despite them probably being a few miles away over the sea.

Becuase of this, i think Cyprus is in it's own little world. When i'm over there, i can't belive that there's all sorts of crap going on in Israel/palestine and Iraq while were soaking up the sun and money a few miles away in relative peace!

Anyways, your thoughts please, particulary from TC's as i've only commented in terms of a GC viewpoint.

nickp,

i think you answered your own question. culturally cyprus is european mostly from the aboriginal greeks but also from the british influence.

geogrpahically it is part of the middle east.

so i guess you can say it is its own little world

Middle east is an area, not a continent, that includes countries from Asia,
Europe and Africa.

So we are in both, and there is no conflict in this.

By the way, the term "Europeans" has more to do with civilizations and culture than with race. The race is Caucasian which includes more than just Europe.

Cyprus is a European country just like any other southern european country. We do have our unique characteristics, but all regions have that. The people of Latvia for example are very different from those in Portugal. Still both countries are European.

Would you regard Australia as being civilized?

uzan,

i dont understand what you are getting at. piratis said "civilization" not civilized. theres a difference between these two words.

and if you're question is whether (anglosaxan) Australians can be considered Europeans, culturally not anymore but their biological heritage is European as is that of white Americans.

but could you perhaps resize it to a smaller size as it 'squahes up' the text to the right of it ? Thanks in advance for your consideration of this.
