Partition is here......!!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Like I said VP keep the land we'll keep the isolation sounds reasonable to me. Actually just in case you have not noticed the International Community are the ones who are keeping the economic embargo. Even your staunchest supporter Pakistan and Britain have kept the economic embargo for 33 years and have clearly stated that they are unable to do anything about direct flights either.

Now I do stand by my statement that I feel as long as you keep the land I support the econmoic embargo and I feel that justifies the illegal occupation of my grandmothers property. As I stated in other posts it is not about the property is about the freedom to choose what we do with that property.

I do feel sad though that we have this deal going for 33 years and none is benefited. At least I am able to admit to that. And willing to look at other options one being BBF with Federal Government, in the last week or so there have been some pretty good proposals on this forum.

For me though it is the ideological unification that is no where near the physical unification that may happen. That is the key to bringing this land and this peoples together. If we unify so we get the land back and for you to escape the economic embargo then as far as am concerned we have not achieved anything because of the inherent racism, core beliefs and ideology of the Cypriot people.

I wonder what you will think when you are the isolated isolationists and we are trading with most of the rest of the world.

Isolationsists.....a bit like insisting to proceed with an unrecognised entity with an IV drip that runs from Ankara which supplies both funds and settlers..... rather then join up with an EU member that happens to be on the same bloody island as you.

(Cue VP...we tried to join up but you rejected the annan plan and now we're getting punished for it while you got rewarded with EU membership)

(Cue me)The annan plan was a racist plan which walked all over the rights of the GC's to the favour of not the TC;s but to Turkey.

(Cue VP....The fact is that we will never join up with you unless the proper protections are in place to safeguard my children against the murdering hordes of Greeks that will turn hairier during the full moon and attack us in their werewolf state.)

(Cue Me so what protections do you want VP?)

(Cue VP my own state where everyone speaks Turkish)

I guess i'm just an isolationist.
surely the Tcs cant be scared still 33 years later
If you read between the lines of some of the posts on various threads, you will notice, not a few times either, the latent hatred of some GCs. Many will go along living with TCs in harmony, but while there are a few 'hot heads' the fear will remain. Mind you, that fear might be forgotten in a few years time when the generation which suffered most, and remember the 'bad' occurences 'die' out. Then the education of the young on both sides needs to be sorted. But by then my fear is that 'partition' will be more entrenched in the north. I would feel uneasy living nextdoor to GC reservist who in in possession of a mini arsenal. Who is to say that at the slightest provocation the arsenal will not be put in use. Somebody will tell me that all arms will be collected. Yeh, right. Why am I so pessimistic suddenly. I blame Piratis and co. Lets hope for a peaceful settlement and live as good neighbours.

bigOz I am not sure if you are missing a point..... I think the limits of the internet is that you miss out on so much with communication non verbal that is. Words can often be misintrpreted. Sorry if I confused you mate.

My point is I am sad that we are in this situation both communities are paying the price and we have not achieved anything in the last 33 years. For me that is disappointing and I really wonder how the rest of the Cypriot population feel about it also, as we are not merely a representations of either side.

Get Real: I just read this in the Cyprus Mail. I am glad you are getting ris of your "small arsenal"

National Guard destroys its last landmines
By Jean Christou

THE last 48,000 landmines in the possession of the National Guard were destroyed during a special ceremony in Tseri yesterday morning.

The move means that Cyprus has completely fulfilled its obligations under the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines.

Defence Minister Christodoulos Pashiardis, who led the ceremony at the Tseri shooting range, said the detonation of the National Guard’s remaining stockpile was not only a message of compliance with international obligations.

“It is also a signal of our willingness, our readiness, our disposition for peace and stability in our country,” he said, and called on Turkey to meet its obligations under the Ottawa treaty.

He said that under the treaty, Ankara must destroy its stocks of antipersonnel mines held in the north by March next year, and those in the minefields by March 2014.

“Unfortunately, for the time being, we have no information that Turkey has taken any measures in fulfilling these obligations,” Pashiardis said.
“Having in mind the threat we face from the large number of occupation forces in Cyprus, the decision to sign the Ottawa Convention was not an easy one to take,” he added.

Foreign Minister Giorgos Lillikas, who also attended the ceremony, said Cyprus was now among the first countries in the world fully to comply with the convention, although the island was facing national security issues.

He said the government decided unilaterally in 2002 to destroy all the landmines laid by the National Guard after 1974.

“This involved the entire 180 kilometers of buffer zone,” Lillikas said, referring to the completed demining project, funded by the EU and carried out by the UNDP-PFF with the assistance of UNFICYP.

Also attending the ceremony yesterday were National Guard top brass and foreign diplomats.
