PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS - TALAT - LETTERS

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS - TALAT - LETTERS

Postby Jerry » Mon Jul 09, 2007 7:18 pm

"Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has sent two letters to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, one on the issue of missing persons and another on a UN-brokered agreement, in July last year, Government Spokesman Vasilis Palmas said."

Could this be the beginning of substantive talks or will events marking the 33rd anniversary of the invasion sour the atmosphere.

Or could it be that elections are coming soon. :)

Hopefully both men sit at the table and talk and get something done. I can only dream right?

The Turkish Cypriot Side will reply today to the Greek Cypriot Leader Tassos Papadopulos’ letter in which he is suggesting a meeting with President Mehmet Ali Talat.
The President will hold a press conference at 11am to announce his response to the letter.
Mr Papadopulos’ letter was evaluated at a special meeting at the Presidential Palace this morning.
Meanwhile, President Talat has denied reports that he will come together with Mr. Papadopoulos at a reception to be organized by the Committee of Missing Persons.
The high level meeting at the Presidential Palace was chaired by President Mehmet Ali Talat and was attended by officials from the Presidency, Prime Ministry and Foreign Ministry.

Speaking during a visit paid to him yesterday, the President told reporters that he will hold a press conference tomorrow to announce his response to Mr Papadopulos’ letter in which he was suggesting a meeting with him.
The press conference – which will start at 11am – will be broadcast live by the BRT-1.( UHF CH 44) (Via TURKSAT1C)

In a statement yesterday, Presidential Spokesperson Hasan Erçakıca confirmed that the Greek Cypriot Side brought a proposal concerning the 8-July Process few days ago but expressed disappointment that the proposal was immediately leaked to the Greek Cypriot press.
He said this reflects the Greek Cypriot Side’s insincere attitude towards the 8-July process and the fact that it is handling the process as a matter for internal politics.

Stressing that the President sees it necessary to hold face-to-face talks for the improvement of relations between the two peoples of the island and for the removal of deadlocks in the 8-July process, he reminded that President Talat has been issuing calls for such a meeting since August, 2006.

Despite calls from the Turkish Cypriot side for `full-fledged negotiations`, Mr Papadopulos is said to be suggesting a meeting with President Talat and commencement of work on two working groups and two technical committees as part of the 8-July agreement.

Meanwhile, the Greek Cypriot Government Spokesman Vasilis Palmas had announced that the Greek Cypriot leader sent two letters to President Mehmet Ali Talat.

According to Greek Cypriot radio, Mr Vasilis told reporters that the first letter was sent with the aim of forwarding the 8-July Process and that the second about the missing persons issue.

He said that in this letter Mr Papadopulos was suggesting a meeting with President Talat at the presence of three members of the Missing Persons Committee .

For a 24 year old you are very naive. Go read the Annan Plan koumbare and see the shafting that was on offer to us and then tell us you would have said yes.

You are tell me you would have said you, but you don't know what for ? I can only thank god that cyprus was not full of twits like you.

IMO, the ones who said yes were the ones willing to sacrifice the patritha just to get (or hope to) get back their scala of land. I say f them, cyprus is not for sale.
