nice way of thinking though new york but not me thks
waist of 2 years of your life.. imagine if in usa all males had to go to army
here with a population smaller then london no one wants to go people hurt themselvs so they dont go.

i thank my luck my perants moved and now i dont have to go to the army: originally i was told 6 months and i needed an exit permit to leave cyprus until i turn 50 but the law changed and now its until 21.. and now i am 24 so i dont need a exit permit either now.
and when i went to leukwsia to sign up to the army they said only if u want to.. so i said no i rather not:

Well not wanting to burst your bubble, you have been misinformed my dear chap. If your father was born in cyprus (mothers don't count) then you are liable for the service if you choose to live in cyprus and make it your permanent home. at the age of 24 you will be obliged to do 6 months, after the age of 27, its 3 months.

I guess the 50 year old rule still applies. As for exit visas, they only stopped asking for these when cyprus joined the EU, got nothing to do with the law change. (law didn't change).

Its still ok to come to cyprus without fear of being conscripted, but like i said, if you come to stay, then things change.

yes both my perants are from paliometoxo my dad did 3 years army...

thats what they said i would have to do 6 months.. when i went to nicosia to sign up and go they said that i had to have papers saying i was in uk otherwise its 2 years but i had no papers through the door or anything saying i have to go.. infact my cypriot ID card and my tautotita.. my name does not show on their computers so.. doesent look like i will be needing to join army..

ive been here 2 or 3 years non stop after being in england and coming to cy every year for holidays only twice or 3 times a yr and so far nothing has been said to me. so i assume they wont do..

although when i went to leave cyprus the lady at the exit permit place told me u dont need exit permit after turning 21 thats where i got my info from

out of interest here....was there compulsory military service for GC youth before 1974 or has it started after 1974?

yes long before the invasion everyone had to do army its not just because of the turkish invasion or "peace operation" as the turks like to call it

risk your life in the cypriot army hahaha you should send that joke into a magazine. oh and bloody captain america reel your bleeing neck in, yeah ok so in the U S of A its a badge of honour to serve your counrty but the rest of the world hate the US troops, yeah ok so there are a lot of people that dont like the UK troops like alot of cypriots. for some reason some of the cypriot population dont realise that they are not only here for a stepping stone for ops in the middle east but they are also here on peace keeping. and every sinlge base is self sufficent and they can fly in any suplies they need, just imagine if the UK troops didnt leave the bases for a week, id love to see how much money the cypriot comunity lost thru the uk troops not putting any money into the cypriot govt etc blah blah blah my rant is over hope no one is offended

If I remember correctly it was a detachment of Ghurkas serving with the British army in 1974 that stopped the Turkish advance near Dhekelia.
Before tourism the British armed forces and their families provided a high percentage of the Cypriot income especialy in Limassol, Wee Woolworths, the Andy Cap Bar all the way down Archbishop Makarios Avenue, the ladies of Eros Square were particularly grateful for the custom, the bus companys made a fortune transporting Army and RAF personel into Episkopi and Akrotiri.

nobody knows if the turks will attack again or not but i gurantee you if they do the british will be fighting in your corner. wen the turks invaded it was an RAF sargent who stopped them all on his own at raf akrotiri telling em to bugger off they might get past him and his 5 gaurds but they wouldnt get past the 3 feild regiments etc etc etc etc marines etc etc etc

southener glad to see some people still realise the british millitary put alot towards the economy of cyprus
