Cyprus: Time to stop Papadopoulos' obstinacy

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby magikthrill » Sat Feb 19, 2005 5:00 am

after the ottomans, the british and then modern day turkey id say its become a habit.

of course, i am no one to shoot you down from your cloud. you can keep thinking that one day international law will change to fit your needs.

It just depends upon a security council resolution. It's not too far away.

Never say never. :D

lol, why would it depend on another SC resolution ? i mean if the current ones mean nothing then why would new ones mean anything?

and im not the one who used that word, unlike you who said it twice. so keep on smiling since apparently thats all you got so far.

Don't expect the SC to pass a resolution anytime soon supporting the Turkish case in Cyprus.

I don't think Russia will ever do this as it still wants to have some power in this world in order to keep the US in check. China would not support a resolution which would turn the north of Cyprus into a Taiwan style state and perhaps France might have something to say as well.

As for Annan, well don't expect him to be at the helm at the UN for much longer!

Last night, speaking to reporters in Brussels, Papadopoulos asked if all these people calling for a renewed dialogue, are interested to bring back the A plan "as is". I think the man has lost all connections with rationality. In the meantime, Talat and the peace-loving TC and GC in general, seem bent on turning the screw on, constantly calling for a new effort to try to solve our problem this year. Papadopoulos, who is lost for words and his pathetic partner, respond by saying that this is an orchestrated effort to bring back the damned plan "as is".

If he donesn't change his stance; Ercan airport will be approved by international community as soon as possible. You think TCs are the hostages of Tassos but you are completely mistaken.

Insan, just going back to your statement on Ercan, the international community cannot approve Ercan for traffic without an application being submitted by the RoC government for registration. As a member of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), it is the responsibility of the recognised government, namely the RoC within whose territory the airport is based to apply for a valid airport code. Therefore, without the application from, and the agreement of the RoC government, no direct scheduled flights to Ercan from other countries (other than Turkey who by doing so is strictly speaking in violation of ICAO rules) can take place.

Whilst my knowledge of international aviation law isn't exactly encyclopaedic  , I do understand that for charter flights the rules are slightly more relaxed, however, as someone pointed out in a previous thread, the insurance costs to a charter airline of flying to an unregistered airport, within an area outside the control of the de jure government of a territory would probably be prohibitive. So the likelihood remains that the lengthy trip via Istanbul or Ankara will continue, unless T.Pap makes a magnanimous gesture of good will and applies for the opening of Ercan as a legitimate point of entry to the country.
