BK, I will find out for sure from my friend in Asal Sube when I contact him by this weekend. All I can say for sure at this time is:
- Your exit permit from 1999 would be applicable if it says so, but it would definitely be until you are 49+ of age according to current laws. If you are under 49, at worst you would have to apply for a fresh one (i.e "erteleme") The requirement according to the info disclosed is that if you are over 49, there is no room for any further postponement of service, and you must apply to do it within the next 24 months (i.e. 2 years). Many people who are 50 and over suffer from one kind of illness to another, most of which can be used as as excuse for being exempt from the 3 months service.
What I can guarantee you is; if you apply before you arrive in Cyprus (to save delays at this end) and ask to join the army in Spring, you can travel few days before the training starts, pay £1500 and have fun for a month, learning how to shoot straight and doing exercises. Being an elder you would be treated with respect at all times. When I did my training at "Gulseren", which is what you'll be doing for the duration of your 1 month service, it was as fun as a TV soap opera! Of course it becomes more tedious and strict when you finish and are allocated to a division for the rest of your service - but that will not apply to you, because the training itself is a month and you'll be finished before then!
- If you enter the South as a tourist from Australia and crossed into the TRNC, it is not the job of the police-guards to check if you have done your military service or not. For all they are concerned, you could be returning or going for a day-trip. The only problem is of course, if an eagle eyed police notices your birthplace as Cyprus, your name Turkish, and your port of entry Larnaca, they might decide to make some enquiries there and then. It is now all computerised in TRNC so they'll soon find out if you've done your service or not pretty quickly. PROBLEM!
If you think its worth the chance then do it, but you would not be made as welcome as you would have had you opted for the first choice I provided above. You are likely to get away with, it but what if......
If you do have any other illnesses other than going mental in CF, then get the right paperwork from the medical authorities in Australia and you would not have to pay and/or do any service, but will be issued a permanent exemption certificate that you can use on all your travels. If you are not sure whether your illness is considered serious enough for an exemption, send me a PM and I can find out for you.
