14 years for savage murder of boy
By George Psyllides
(archive article - Wednesday, June 8, 2005)
A MAN who last year stabbed an 11-year-old boy to death on the pier of the old Limassol port was yesterday jailed for 14 years.

Salih Mehmet Ozhovarda had been playing with friends on the pier on July 14 when he was attacked by 30-year-old Andreas Nicolaou who stabbed him several times with a kitchen knife in the stomach, chest and back before driving the knife in the boy’s right temple.

Salih died soon after arriving at Limassol general hospital.

Nicolaou, a known drug user and psychopath, was caught by the marine police while trying to escape.

The Limassol Assizes Court yesterday stressed the seriousness of the “defendant’s atrocious and inhuman act, which resulted in a little child losing his life unexpectedly, and without cause”.

The court took into consideration the man’s previous drugs conviction as well as his personal circumstances, the most important being his mental condition.

Medical evidence presented during the trial suggested that the man suffered from psychotic tendencies expressed in deranged notions of a paranoid nature.

“As he said after his arrest, some Persian man got out of his body and killed the child to cause conflict between Turkey and Persia,” the court said.

The court took into account the fact that the defendant acted under such circumstances, which reduced his responsibility.

“On the other hand it also took into consideration that the defendant was a highly dangerous individual who needs to be confined and treated for a long and unspecified period of time,” the court said.

It emerged after the murder that Nicolaou had undergone treatment for psychosis twice in the Limassol psychiatric ward.

he got 14 years jail time. Had this been the UK and with an insanity plea he would have got 5 years in a mental institution.

Since i dug up the punishment for you VP, see if you can dig up the punishment your soldiers faced for shooting an unarmed man on his knees with his hands up.....

Turkish soldiers kill Greek Cypriot with three bullets
Larnaca, Oct 14 (CNA) -- A 58-year-old Greek Cypriot, Petros Kakoullis, who was shot and killed yesterday by the Turkish occupation troops, received three bullets, two on the chest and one on the neck.
According to coroner Petros Vanezis, who carried out a three-hour post mortem examination on the body this evening, the first two bullets hit Kakoullis on the chest and on the neck.

The lethal third bullet hit Kakoullis on the chest, he said.

The coroner declined to give more details.

The body was handed over to the Cypriot authorities earlier today through the UN.

According to Kakoullis' son-in-law Panikos Hadjiathanasiou, 27, who was collecting snails with him, two Turkish soldiers shot his father-in-law twice while he was standing with his hands up.

The Turkish soldiers walked towards him and from a close range they shot him again, finishing him off.

The new murder of a Greek Cypriot man, the fourth in four months by the Turks, took place near the British Base Area of Dhekelia, in the south-eastern part of the island, adjacent to the Turkish-occupied territory.

Any links or clarificaiton would be appreciated.

Do you want to prove you that the court decision (exactly as quoted by RichardB) was given to you as soon as it was published?

Finally do you want me to remind you what your answer was when the court decision was presented to you in THIS VERY FORUM?

Thank you Richard for answering without throwing about insults and accusation like so many others giving the impression that the matter is unimportant and should not be raised or questioned. Do you think 14 years is enough for murder or do you think the mental plea was a coverup so as not to allow matters to escalate.

My personal opinion is that the sentance for murder should be life.

As I'm sure you're aware this is very rare now in any country.

I think it has already been mentioned elsewhere on the thread that if this had happened in the UK then by playing the mental health issue (which is very hard to disprove) then the perpetrator would have probably only got 5 years.

If the murderer does in fact stay in prison for the full 14 years then to be honest I think that it is the best that could be hoped for - whether its right or not is another matter

This is a dispicable murder of an innocent human for which I personally am very sorry but raises many questions as to what he was doing in a miltary zone, where there are Turkish soldiers trained to kill the enemy without a second thought, why didnt he go pick snails in a safe area? on the other hand the innocent children had no such warnings. The difference is the children are an example of what it would be like in a united CYprus and the unfortunate GC man could pick his snails becuase the Turkish army would have gone, do you see the difference?
