Annan plan’s failure not a pardon for Turkey

EUROPEAN People's Party President Wilfried Martens sent a clear message yesterday that the failure of the 2004 referendum on the Annan plan did not mean Turkey has been pardoned from its continued military occupation of Cyprus.

Speaking at a joint press conference with DISY President Nicos Anastassiades, Martens noted that “our common objective is none other than a unified Cyprus in a united Europe”.

“The continuing division of the island is a tragic anachronism and one which we are unwilling to accept,” he pointed out.

He reassured of “EPP's unwavering support” and noted “our very clear position that the failure of the 2004 referendum does not mean that Turkey has been pardoned from its continued military occupation of Cypriot territory.”

“This was expressed in the resolution on Cyprus, presented by DISY and adopted by the EPP Congress in Rome in March 2006, which inter alia calls on the Turkish authorities to effect an early withdrawal, pursuant to the relevant UN resolutions, of its forces within a specific timetable, and calls on the Turkish authorities to show their constructive attitude in finding a settlement of the Cyprus question, leading to an equitable solution, based on the relevant UN resolutions and on the principles upon which the EU is founded,” Martens said.

He furthermore praised the “catalytic role” of DISY in efforts to reach a peaceful and lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue.

Anastassiades praised the role of EPP in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and the adoption of the Democratic Rally's positions on the Cyprus problem.

“When others, after 2004, kept silent, the EPP and President Martens never ceased to deplore the occupation of northern Cyprus by the Turkish army. They never ceased to be the most steadfast supporters of a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem. And we will continue to depend on the support of EPP until we achieve our aim for a reunited Cyprus, without troops, a common homeland for all Cypriots,” he concluded. (CNA)

Yea and?

Erhh listen, I realize that some Cypriots are extremely loyal to their affiliated parties. I am not one of those Cypriots...do you understand this? I actually believe in something like a term limit for our politicians. Having said that, I want you to realize that no matter who was President in 2004, the Greek Cypriots would have voted the A plan down. Now, why do I state this? It’s a fact that extensive polls, both internal and external, were taken before the President’s NO speech that showed an overwhelming NO from the Greek Cypriot side.

Like I told you before, if in the coming election, someone more closer to your views may indeed get elected. If that were to occur then that is the wish of the Cypriot people and that vote must be respected by all. Now, say your politician, who ever he may be, does succeed; he will evidently run into the same problems dealing with the occupation. During that time, I am not going to blame that President for the occupation. see the difference between you and i?

The article above was from the Cyprus mail and i have copied and pasted the entire article. I dont know what you are talking about? Link to it below:

EPP on Cypriot politics, So what?:

Asked to comment on signs of support for Kasoulides’ candidacy from the European Popular Party (EPP), Anastassaides said it was normal for like parties in Europe to support each other’s candidates. However he still called it a positive development. President of the EPP Wilfried Martens was on the island on Thursday.

Asked to comment on his statements yesterday relating to Kasoulides, government spokesman Vassilis Palmas said “in the February 2008 presidential elections the first and last word on who will be President of the Republic belongs to the people of Cyprus.''

I think what Cypez is saying is that Martens said 2 main things, but it was ''Annan plans faliure not a pardon to Turkey'' that was mentioned and nothing was said in regards to what he/she said about your president...

I could be wrong though.

Do you people really believe that a change of president will change the situation in Cyprus. Talat and his little propaganda fed machines are blaming Papadopoulos for the stalemate in discussion to cover their own arses from fire.

One of is little partitionist loudspeakers went as far as saying change your president for a move on the Cyprus problem. What was happenning 5 years ago when Papadopoulos was not in his position as President? Nothing will move even if Papadopoulos was not President. Personally I couldn't care less who is President. The Cypro will not move unitl such time the UK/US alliance is good and ready.

Furthermore the EU has a big part to play in this, not just for Cyrus but if they are trully sincere abut war on terror and freedom and democracy. Why they even opened membership with Turkey in the first place is beyond comprehension, but in light of power, lack of integrity, greed and personal gains I can appreciate their reasons for doing so. Turkey is a country that in 2007 is violating another country's sovereighnty, violating human right of not a peoples but also EU citizens. Why the EU even bothered in the first place it is beyond me. Turkey's EU membership should not had been even thought of as possible until she withdrew her troops from Cypriot land.

Turkey is not only violating the rights of Greek speaking Cypriots but also Turkish speaking Cypriots. Turkish speaking Cypriot's right can be protected via the UN troops and as such aid in the process of unification talks.

i still dont see why people are annoyed, for the addition of one small detail.
i neither said that we should listen to him, nor that turkey is innocent - besides martens himself said the opposite.
it played in the news , and it was a point of discussion.
what is the problem ?

.....

i didnt even post the exact words of the guy

The UN cannot protect themselves let alone TCs, we want Turkey here until we find a solution its as simple as that and as we are a part of this island you have to accept this fact. The only way you get Turkey to leave is to show to TCs that a united Cyprus will benefit everyone and that they will not be politically brushed to oneside by the numerically larger and agressive GC "RoC" steam roller. Since the last attempt at unification the side who resoundingly rejected the plan put before the people have not produced any alternativesto the plan, so while you have your fingers up your arse and dont know what the fuck you want Turkey will remain our guests.

You need to wake up a bit because too many years in Deutschland makes the brain go jelly-like.

Indeed, some elements in Europe would rather have an idiot for a Cyprus president so that the “problem” gets sorted out quickly regardless of the outcome because they have nothing to lose anyway and couldn’t care less about us. Indeed some of them are even obstructed from expanding their financial gains due to the Cyprus problem.

Cypezokyli, I hope one day that you’ll re-discover your Cypriotness and feel the pride and passion that many of us are experiencing here because I really do feel for our people lost in the diaspora.
