You obviously read too many one sided reports from the Turkish and part of the Greek press, otherwise you should have know that it is Talat and Turkey that are backtracking on the "8th of July" agreement, and not Papadopoulos! I suggest you stop reading too much of "To Vima" and "Ta Nea" or "Zaman" and the "Turkish Daily News!" Read a little bit from some more serious newspapers, such as "Kathimerini!

Is what so?
Ok kifeas, Merkel's opinion makes no difference, neither do the opinions of the rest of the EU members who one by one put the blame on the RoC

Which other EU leader, apart from perhaps some British and Greek ones, do you know of making such similar comments against the GC side? The French, the Austrians, the Dutch, the Belgians, the Spanish, who?

You know dumb well why Merkel talks in the way she talks! You know well that Merkel is in a government collision with another party in Germany which derives most of its electorate from the Turks of Germany, and therefore she feels the need to have its partners at peace with their electorate! Yet, you choose to deliver blows under the belt of the GC side, by citing the nonsense of Angela Merkel, just to show that it is all Papadopoulos fault! Nice!

But Kifeas, it was you that started this thread with what Merkel is stated as saying.

I don't see why suddenly Merkel should change her tune and start trying to please either Turkey or the Turks in Germany. There are plenty of criticisms from her in the past.........

Maybe, just maybe she (and Germany) is beginning to realise that it was wrong to accept the ROC into the EU without there being an accepted solution to the Cypprob ?

And maybe, just maybe other countries will take note as well.

Whats the problem Kifeas, if her comments are rubbish then ignore them at your own peril as of course you always know best, the tide has turned and you still choose to ignore whats staring you in the face, keep up the good work.

Hey Kifeas! You have couple ofd kilos of IQ for sale?
Mr "self declared" IQ master, your post above is analogous to the dithering of a little crying boy! The immigrant Turks in Germany do not give a toss about the TCs in Cyprus, neither do they vote because the current leader thinks allowing RoC into EU was a mistake whatever... They are more concerned with their immigrant status and their own position in Germany. The leader who looks after those interests can applaud /praise the RoC government instead and would still get their vote.

You really find any silly excuse to run away from the truth! Since it is obvious you do not fool anyone else, I sometimes wander if this is an attempt to fool yourself and stay oblivious to everything else really going on around you? The winds of change will prevail and you can scream and shout all you like...

The chancellor stressed that there have been no changes in the policies of both Turkey and Greek Cyprus during the negotiations and that this had been a criteria showing that countries with unsolved internal issues should be accepted to the union only after the problems are solved.

mistake or not the roc is already in and turkey is out...but I see another swipe at turkey...it seems the EU doesn't want to repeat the same mistake with turkey

So looks like we in agreement that it was a mistake to admit the ROC under those circumstances ?

Does anyone know why Merkel should use the term 'Greek Cyprus' instead of the ROC ?

No London boy, we did not reach to any such agreement that it was a mistake to admit the RoC in the EU, and even if you believe so, what can you do about it now? Unlike your "motherland's" illegal Turkish occupation and ethnic cleansing of the indegenous northern Cyprus population, Cyprus's EU accession is a perfectly legitimised, legalised and consolidated political fait accompli!

As for Angela Merkel's alleged reference to a "Greek Cyprus," no she did not say so! It is just that the news source is an Azerbaijani one, and therefore the terms are changed so that they are in line with the Turkish practice to refer to the RoC as the "Greek Cyprus!" Angela Merkel could not possibly have committed such a serious diplomatic mistake!

She knows perfectly well that her country has signed an EU treaty of accession in 2003, which admitted the whole of Cyprus into the EU, and not just any non-existing Greek or Turkish Cyprus, or any non existing north or south Cyprus!

I was responding to Pitsilos where he says "it seems the EU doesn't want to repeat the same mistake with turkey"

And you are correct, the ROC has been admitted and nothing can take that away, and I don't believe anyone here is contemplating that. However, as we have said, Angela Merkel & Germany may be beginning to realise that perhaps the EU was wrong in accepting the ROC without a solution in place.

With reference to the term 'Greek Cyprus', yep, I can undersand the context in how it is written - thanks for clearing that one up

Kifeas if your IQ is so high, you shouldn't have used Ajerbaijans terminology of "Greek Cyprus"....
IQ is not measured by the loads of things one knows, but on how he or she utilizes simple things.

To the main point:
a) Merkel's statement is not verified. I doubt she said it.
b)Angela Merkel seems to yield all the time compared with her original beleifs. She doesn't seem a strong character imo and I really do wonder how the hell she became Prime Minister. She looks like a puppey everywhere she appears.
c)Cyprus' EU accession WAS AN AGREEMENT for as long back as Helsinki. That agreement said Cyprus would acceed even if the Cyprob is not solved assuming the GC side showed good will in negotiations. The other part of the agreement was TURKEY would get a date as well.
d)As Londonboy very well said, Merkels statement might had been actually referring at the whole Helsinki agreement. Cyprus' EU accession was wrong ==> Turkey's accession will be wrong.

Here is another view for u from greens party

Cem Özdemir – a member of the European Parliament’s Green Party and the High Level Contact Group has repeated that the Turkish Cypriot People should take its place within the European Union. He said the Green Party will continue to work on ways of making it possible for Turkish Cypriot deputies to be represented at the European Parliament as full members and added that the party aims to achieve this objective within the year 2008.
He stated that the Green Party appreciates the Turkish Cypriot People’s disappointment but said `you are not alone, there are many people who share the same view`.
an exclusive interview to BRT, Euro MP Cem Özdemir referred to the Green Party delegation’s contacts on the island as very fruitful and said that they had a very sincere meeting with President Mehmet Ali Talat - whom he said, has been waging a joint struggle with them for the reunification of the island.
On the Greek Cypriot Side’s approach on the Cyprus issue, he complained that the Greek Cypriot Administration’s present attitude is dragging the island to a division but said that this is not the way out.
Stressing that the reunification of the island is necessary for the security of the whole region, he said “in short term, the Greek Cypriot Leader Papadopulos could benefit from the continuation of the division but in long term, he will lose. So, he has to return to the negotiations table”.
Underlining the importance of finding a solution to the Cyprus problem under the aegis of the United Nations, Mr. Özdemir stated that although the Annan Plan was left behind, another peace plan with different name will come to the negotiations table in future.Referring to the Presidential election in South Cyprus, he pointed out that three candidates are standing for the election and said this can make a difference and could have an effect on the Cyprus issue.
Stating that the Turkish Cypriot side’s great efforts towards a solution had evoked strong repercussions in the world, the Euro MP said that small steps - like the opening of new crossing points and de-mining- could be taken to maintain the international community’s interest to the problem.
Mr. Özdemir also stressed that the North’s economic improvement would positively contribute to the peace process, but underlined the need to protect the environment, such as the unique natural beauty in Karpaz, while improving economically. On relations between the Turkish Cypriot people and the EU, he reiterated that the Turkish Cypriot People should take its place within the European Union.
