Cyprus jobless rate falls
UNEMPLOYMENT in May fell to 4.2 per cent, down 0.2 per cent from April, according to figures released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.
The figures are among the lowest in Europe, with unemployment among men at 3.4 per cent and among women it stood at 5.2 per cent. For those under 25 years of age, the figure rose to 9.4 per cent.
In the Euro area, seasonally-adjusted unemployment stood at seven per cent in May, compared with 7.1 per cent the month before.
According to Eurostat, in May 2007, the lowest rates were registered in the Netherlands (3.2%), Denmark (3.3%) and Ireland (4.1%). Unemployment rates were highest in Slovakia (10.8%) and Poland (10.5%).
Eurostat estimates that 16.4 million men and women in the EU27, of which 10.4 million were in the euro area, were unemployed in May 2007. In May 2006, 18.6 million men and women in the EU27, of which 11.8 million were in the euro area, were unemployed.
