i know there are numerous posts regarding this but i would like to ask with regards to my situation - there is myself 44, my daughters 20 and 27 and my grandson 4.
we have got roughly 45k savings and are looking to long term rent in or around the pafos area.
the basic idea was my daughters got jobs ( youngest is graphic designer got a national diploma in fine art etc) and the oldest well just anything really to help with the rent (cleaning, bar work etc.)
and for me to really help with regards to taking granson school (state) and if i could get something fit in with that great.
as well as savings and as i have read the wages (cyp400 month each) my daughter would get roughtly cyp180 month maintenance.
i am wondering with this initial breakdown of finances would we realistically be able to move and be ok or would we really struggle
we dont want a fantastic villa with pool etc we just want a nice home i have looked on a few sites and got an idea of renting something between cyp 400 - 500?? and have spoke to a few rental agents on phone and they say we would be ok but id just like to ask this forum because you are all doing it and i would like a honest answer so we dont all end up homeless!! thanks

look it sounds and looks great to live here BUT be warned its not easy there not many jobs but im sure there are plenty of places to rent and its very expensive to live here to many people imigrating here and not enough of everything to go round. the only people that have a good life here is the ones that retire here and have an income coming in from abroad.

Child maintenance isn't that much. Two kids are about 400per YEAR! Jobs in Paphos are really, really limited. Most shops, restaurants close for the winter. They would be better off driving to Limassol for work but then the cost of petrol would be excessive. Work is hard to come by anyway, especially if you don't speak Greek. this is not a country to come over to and "make it". Like rulla said the retired ones with savings do better than most! Check the search facility as this topic has been touched so many times!!!

the child maintenance is converted to cyp - she gets that now every month so it wouldnt stop if we moved

although a beautiful place, pafos isnt exactly the best place for jobs, look at limassol also.

i find life expensive here although i earn what is considered a good salary.

the largest % of people returning to the uk is due to running out of money and going back pennyless, so be very careful.

I think £400 - £500 a month for renting a property may be a bit excessive. We have a 3 bedroom bungalow in Limassol at £250pm. It's unfurnished and has large verandah at the front, side yard & parking plus smaller garden area at the rear, family bathroom, guest WC, utility room and separate kitchen. The living room is approx 25m2. We've been here just over 3yrs.

I've taken a few jobs and the highest salary I've received has been Cy£600pm. Bar work will pay less but there may be tips, of course to boost the earnings. Ensure the social insurance is paid by the employer otherwise the work is being offered illegally and you will not receive the correct salary or any benefits should the position end.

You should be looking at a resort that is open all year round ideally for work. There are a few offshore companies now in Paphos but certainly there are more in Nicosia and Limassol.

You need to do your homework thoroughly before choosing the right location and bear in mind you will more than likely need transport as there are very few bus routes to serve an employed person. All of this must be included when you are budgeting for your move.

Bring at least enough rainy day funds to last approx 2yrs in order to allow for any unexpected expenditure - and believe me, there will be some. Jobs aren't always so easy to come by. You may apply for a position then hear nothing for a month - then a phone call out of the blue plus an interview and then ask if you can start immediately!

If you come at the wrong time when the season is quiet - it's likely you could be looking for 3 months or so before finding a job that suits.

As long as you research, make preparations and don't compare everything that happens here with how it works in the UK, you should be fine. More importantly, you will be happy too!

Sorry to but in, this site has quite a few properties in the Paphos area but as with all agencies their prices are much higher than those that you find yourself, driving around you will find for sale and rent signs everywhere most of which are open to negotiation.
