The English colonial system worked on the basis that, after their departure from a former colony there would be continuing trade between th two whereby the new republic would be dependant on UK for its economy!
These colonies always imported British cars and British machinery for their industry and exported their fresh produce to UK. This way, the partnership continued for a very long time whereby cheap produce would be imported from and expensive machinery exported to that new republic.
The only problem with Cyprus was its strategic importance as well - it was necessary for Britain to keep military bases there, hence the sovereign bases of today.
If ENOSIS or PARTITION were to take place, none of the above would have been possible because both Greece and Turkey were under the control of America with close economic ties. Those countries were driving on the right hand side of the road (as in rest of EUROPE) rather than left (as in UK).
So one can see the benefits of Cyprus becoming a republic rather than a part of Greece or partitioned between Greece and Turkey. For that, they had no choice but to blackmail Makarios when the Secret Service discovered his unusual sexual preferences at the time. There would have been no other way, he would have been allowed to continue as a leader, had the British made this discovery public.
So Makarios was forced into accepting the republic - but to his credit, 6-7 years on realised a Cyprus Republic was not such a bad idea after all and changed his views about ENOSIS - and so did AKEL who were gaining popularity all the time. That's what had led to Junta backed EOKA-B attacking him and the rest of the island in 1974...
