Cooking and cleaning

Postby Hazza » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:30 am

I'm not very domesticated when it comes to the kitchen. I pride myself on having a clean living enviroment, but things that I need to work on are....

A) Best way of cleaning an electric oven? Anyone have hints and tips on that? Was thinking of putting a pan of water in the oven, switching it on and hopefully get it steam cleaned. Don't know if this will indeed work, or even if it can cause long term damage to the oven?

B) Cooking. Being a single guy living on my own, you can imagine what type of diet I have, mainly frozen foods. I do try experimenting in the kitchen, sometimes it works, more often than not, the food ends up in the dustbin with me making something very unhealthy to eat.

One of the things I do make which is tasty is chicken breast which I cut a pocket into it. I stuff it with Cheese and onion before wrapping bacon all around it before putting in the oven for 30 mins. This I make with rice and veg. Though it tastes good, very good in fact, I'm making a healthy meal unhealthy again.

Anyone have any good recipies that I can try? I really do need to sort out my diet as I will end up with health problems if I keep this up.

Thanking you kindly:)

Have you tried a salade niçoise? Easy to make, if a little fiddly. You can Google a thousand recipes and easily adapt them to your taste. For your info, I make the following mods to the traditional:
1. I prefer baby potatoes boiled in their jacket
2. I prefer canned sardines to anchovies, which I find are too strong and tend to beat the delicate flavours of some of the other ingredients into the ground
3. Make the vinaigrette with lemon juice instead of vinegar (less aggressive)
4. I use Iceberg lettuce
And don't forget the very finely chopped garlic!!!

Very healthy and well balanced with carbohydrates (potatoes), proteins (fish and beans), vitamins (salad components) and fibres galore.

Another very simple salad I adore:
cherry tomatoes (or Italiian plum tomatoes), sliced in half or in 1 cm pieces
An equal volume of fresh halloumi in 1 cm cubes
finely chopped fresh basil to taste (or fresh mint, but I prefer basil)
salt (careful if the halloumi is salty) and loads of freshly ground black pepper
Best extra virgin olive oil to coat the tommies and cheese

Note: no lemon juice or vinegar: the acidity of the tomatoes is sufficient.
Not so well balanced as a niçoise, but delicious with fresh-baked bread.

Spahetti bolognaise,really easy,
Fry a kilo of minced beef in a deep pan with a chopped onion, pour of grease, add salt, pepper, garlic ,oregano, a dash of lea perrins(worcester sauce),Add tin of chopped tomatoes good glass of red wine (carton will do) and tomato puree cook on low heat for 30 minutes.Put large pan of salted water on to boil and add spaghetti(the dry type) cook acording to instructions(usually about 20 minutes).strain of water and rinse in boiling water(gets rid of stickiness) strain and add to sauce.Plate up and grate parmesan cheese on top, serve with more wine and garlic bread.Lovely, now made myself hungry!! (this will make enough for several days and heats up well)
