Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

This seems to be more accurate than what pcjunky wrote about.

Perhaps he meant 40 motorist and not 40 Motorcyclist.

"New road death sees toll surpass 2006"

A 23-YEAR-OLD motorcyclist died yesterday after crashing his vehicle in Larnaca.

The Polish man, who was working in Cyprus, was the third person to be killed on Cyprus’ roads in the last week. No specific reasons for the crash was given, but there were no other vehicles involved.

This brings the annual road toll so far to 42 deaths, a slight increase from 40 over the same period in 2006. The Cyprus police say they are working hard to reduce the number of road deaths on the island, which continues to be a major issue despite the increased enforcement of breathalyser tests, a new blood alcohol limit and the installation of traffic safety cameras seen over the last few years.

A December 2006 study by the European Transport Safety Council ranked Cyprus as the fifth worst country in the European Union with regards to road safety.

Thanks kikapu, that's more like it.

I am also surprised that statistics compare road tolls as per population. For instance they will say xx deaths per 100.000 citizens. But a lot of EU countries don't have as many vehicles per 100.000 as Cyprus has. If you understand what I mean.

Also police always criticize quality of drivers but no mention of the quality of the roads they to drive on.

In all honesty, I drove for two weeks on the road in the RoC covering almost 1600 Kilometers in April this year and the overall driving skills were not that bad. I saw couple of accidents, but then again, that's the same everywhere. Perhaps I was lucky, but when some members talked about Cypriot drivers before going to Cyprus, had prompted me to take out all the necessary and more insurance on the rental car than I normally would in other countries. I'll know better for next time.

Kafenes, I think that sometimes the roads are to blame too. I was behind someone on a fairly big road when they swerved to the right and nearly hit an oncoming car head on. When I got to where he was on the road - I saw why - a VERY big and fairly deep hole. Unless I know the road very well I always go quite slow just in case. Parking is out of control too, its like people cant use the legs they were born with, its pathetic, having to pass on the wrong side of the road because an idiot cant walk a few metres..

Is this question directed at me souroul.??

I drove from Larnaca to Nicosia, to Paphos, Limassol, to Ayia Napa, to Nicosia to Larnaca, plus most of the4 surrounding areas of those places.

On a personal interest, where in Arizona are you. I know the state quite well as well as loving the "high desert". I'm just curious, that's all.

I got hit two weeks ago from the back. I was the fourth car in line, so you can figure the speed that guy had on the road, and it was in Limassol.
What I don't understand is why do people here do not look before they get into an intersection, they just get inside of it, or in round-abouts and wave at you... is it written in the book to wave? 8) The same for people crossing the streets.. they don't care you have 50-60 km per hour and you are 50 meters from them.. they just start crossing the road without looking and when you beep them, they start cursing you, like it's your fault.
One day a car was coming towards me, on my lane, at high speed, I had to go out of the street not to hit him/her. I don't know what he/she wanted to prove.
A few days ago, I was out to buy smth. I saw someone going rear, hitting a car (mostly getting on top of the front of that car), ripping that car's plate.. and then just leave.
After I fixed my car from that accident, I'm kinda' afraid to park it near an intersection, on high risk places, thin roads etc.... this sucks.

Erm, yeah, I've noticed the driving does indeed get a lot better whenever I go to Paphos or Nicosia. In Limassol it sucks. We live and work on a fairly main road here, and you see quite a lot of accidents from the window. Crossing the road can be scary if you (the pedestrian) don't concentrate on the drivers and state of the cars. Make a mistake and they plough straight into you. Hardly something the driver here should worry about, after all they take 99% of the time talking on the phone, waving and talking to people on the street as they drive along, beep other people for standing, walking, being in a side junction, checking their hair out, etc etc.

It is amusing though to think people here must be pretty knowledgeful of the area (not exactly huge) and yet still manage to ram into the back of cars waiting at red lights on completely straight roads, at 20mph, in the middle of the day, with full visibility, and *nothing* else on the road or pavements really. Really really weird...

Cheers
