Geocaching

Postby murf62 » Sun Jul 01, 2007 8:30 am

Most people here have probably not heard of Geocaching, so this is a quick post to raise the profile of it in Cyprus.

What on earth is Geocaching then? Well it's a hobby/sport/game that anyone can take part in! Adults, kids, dogs, full families together. Think treasure hunt on a world wide scale and you're about there. In Cyprus, there are a few British Ex-Pats, servicemen and of course holidaymakers who are active, but very few GCs/TCs. Why is this?

If you're interested in getting out & about with a purpose and seeing some parts of Cyprus that you would never otherwise see, then have a look at the links below to see what it's all about.

There are currently 86 'Caches' in Cyprus waiting to be discovered as can be seen here, but this number will grow (There are almost 20000 in the UK now!). As well as searching for existing caches, it's also just as much fun placing them and getting others to find yours.

Interesting game. However, be warned that any site owned by the Dept of Antiquities would be strictly off-limits, as would burying a cache.

Burying a cache is against the rules, as is placing caches in ruins or dry stone walls. All caches placed are done so with the landowners permission & have to be cleared by a reviewer before being published.

Interesting! Where can I get the Google Earth map that you have above? Is there anywhere in Cyprus that they sell good GPS devices?

I have never bought a GPS in Cyprus, but I would imagine that outdoors/hunting type shops would stock them. Also, marine shops as mentioned above usually sell the handheld ones as well as marine GPS units.

They are available, but only one company has the rights to the map (Terranav). They are selling it on a Mio 168 which is seriously outdated for £379 which is quite frankly taking the p**s. I have a copy of the software running on my Mio a701 phone and it's not much good compared to things like Tomtom, but if it's all you can get then it has to do.
