trip to the north

Postby tony harte » Sat Jun 30, 2007 2:17 pm

Took a trip to the north last week when i was over.

I crossed over at Vrysoulles through the army camp.
No problems going through the South side, but at the north checkpoint they refused to accept i had insurance cover for the north included in my policy, even though i had my cover note with me, and i had to pay CY10 to cross.

I was amazed at how busy it was in Famagusta, i had this vision of a bombed out scene, far from it as its only a section that is fenced off.

We drove around the fence of the ghost town, very sad to see on one side of the road a fenced off ghost town and just 20ft on the other side of the road Turkish settlers.

Not wishing to get into the north/south argument, i cannot see how they can ever give it back as they are so consolidated.

We had a beer, Turkish coffee and a water in a street cafe, and the bill should have come to 7LR, I had only CY pounds and yes guess what i was charged CY6.00, I was not about to argue but it is taking the P...so if you do go over go with Lr not CYP.

The North is a very lovely part of the Island and well worth a visit but plan your trip to cross back to the south in daylight

Tony I am really surprised that you were ripped off like that, considering there are approx. 3tl to the Cyp Pound. You should have only paid a couple of pounds. I ALWAYS make sure that I know the exchange rate before I go to the little places, but please dont think everyone is like that , they arent I can assure you. And as for arguing - you have every right, its tantamount to stealing. Anyway glad you liked the North in general..........

When stationed at Episkopi Garrison in the 60s Ali's bar in Epi village was the favourite evening haunt of the single service personel, 20 kebabs on scewers for 50p stuck in the top of Keo bottles.
Will Ali ever come back? I doubt it after nearly four generations..

Hi Tess
I did know the exchange rate, i knew i was being ripped off.

We were in our Cyprus Car, unlike our UK car where i keep a selection of baseball bats, cattle prods and CS gas LOL

I have always found areas near to the border a bit tence, i had a bad experiance when i crossed over in Nicosia 2yrs ago, we got followed by a group of Turkish youths and had to make a quick exit towards the area covered by CCTV close to the crossing point and the youths backed off.

In retrospect this was most likly due to the fact my stepson was wearing an Arsenal shirt and i was wearing a Tshirt with USA on the front.

LOL

I also found it tence last year when we drove up to the border town of Kato Pyrgos in the Noth West of the Island.

What a load of garbage you write Mr. harte. the turkish people are kind hospitable if you got ripped off its your own fault, but maybe thats not the full story.

Hippo, As a GC, i have been over to the north on several occasions and felt quite at ease.

But why is what mr hart is saying garbage, it was his experience and opinion! As for bringing it on himself, do you reckon he had a note on hes forehead saying 'Gullible, please rip me off'

Not a good start to your posting Hippo.

I suspect it was the cafe owner who was at fault here, he was the one ripping Tony off.

It can be the same in many places in South Cyprus. You have to be careful wherever you go.
