Scum again. They all speak English fluently. The only person I ever met who, apparently, only spoke Welsh, was some 95 year old man. I went to his house for school sponsor money, but he pretended to not understand me. While watching Eastenders... Basically I understand the point about keeping the language alive (I am actually Welsh) but they are just rude. I remember times when groups of decent people would start talking totally (and they all spoke perfect english) welsh even though members of the group didn't speak welsh.

Brought it to a head for me when local morons got my mum chucked out from the local primary school (60 kids size). She was teaching 8 year olds english reading and writing. For no money. But some parents argued that an English person should not be allowed to teach their kids english. Yep... Even after it was explained that my Mum is actually Welsh but doesn't speak Welsh, they still pushed it. And the argument for not being able to communicate without speaking welsh is not true. All welsh kids can speak english as well as any english kid. She was just helping them with their reading. They then replaced her with a proper teacher (costing money) who was as thick as s**t. I know, because I was a pupil there. Seriously retarded. Our headmaster used to leave the school in the afternoon and go get drunk at the pub (was always flushed when he got back and got done for drink driving once). He said to my Mum when I left (11 years old) that I could read and write better than him. I believe that.

Sums it up though that some painted sign on leaving Anglesey says "Go home English!" or something like that, and has been there for as long as I remember. Only it is written in Welsh. Honest. Also once a year they used to spray anti-english sayings on English owned shop windows in my local college town. Only, again, they wrote them all in Welsh. Honestly...

Cheers

This is what I'm refering to when I said I was called scam 'they are all scum'.....

Can't see where I said "they are all scum" in that quote. Plus the bit I said "they are scum" obviously refers to the people acting like 5 year olds and pretending they don't speak English, not a massive sweeping statement making out all Welsh are scum (otherwise myself and everyone in my family would be included for starters).

Get all upset about something you implied from what I said if you want, but that would be your mistake. As for a *lot* of people who exist on Anglesey and are not much better than pond life, then I stand by that one. I lived there long enough.

Cheers

sorry i stick up for welsh folk...this comes under 'patriotism'!! but at least you know WHY they were like they are...we were (and kids still are being) taught in Junior/Primary School what the English did to us... its upsetting to think our great great grandparents were subjected to 'Racism' too! Most schools are actually taken on a school trip to St Fagans (Welsh Folk Museum) and have a lesson in the school there that they would have had and are punished by wearing the 'Welsh Knot' if we spoke welsh...

No excuse to act like idiots. *That* is just plain rude. How exactly would you class these bigotted morons who got my *Welsh* mother thrown out of the local primary school for teaching English (for free)?

And yeah, yeah, I remember going to that holiday camp by that big lake (can't remember name... Bala perhaps?) with the school for a week where they insisted you spoke Welsh. Was quite amusing as the stupid canoe tried to drown you and the teachers insisted you remembered the word in Welsh for "Help" before coming to your rescue. Was summed up quite nicely on the Sunday when they insisted on dragging you to a local church for a service (never mind your religion). Talk about putting your views on others... And the food was like something out of Oliver... except you didn't want more...

Most places in the world encourage you to learn their language. Like it when you try. Not North Wales. Oh no. Cut you down and take the mick. I know plenty of people who stopped talking the language because of the sheer hatred that comes from the locals. Nice. If people get a bit miffed with Cyprus, then this is nothing. Go to Anglesey. Unbelievable. Goto South or Mid Wales though and it is pretty much a different story. A lot of my family pretty much speak Welsh all the time, but from the locals there is none of that hatred you get from the north if you talk English. They just switch from one language to another, no worries. And when it comes to this nice united Wales, then I think not. Anglesey hates everyone from South Wales almost as much as the English by the looks of things (amusing when they are obviously mixed massively from Liverpool people). Come from Cardiff and you are practically English and the like are good comments I remember well....

umm St Fagans isn't a camp! Its a museum!! You dont get to stay a week there maybe you're talking about Llangranog??? I went there too or maybe somewhere else..not heard of Bala!! as for people from Cardiff being 'practically English'..say that to them on match day and you'd get lynched!!! The only reason south and mid wales is like it is, is because they are 'stuck' with English language because its mostly all they know...now though welsh lessons are on the increase (I was learning before I moved!) I could hold a converation now...but north welsh is different to south anyway so wouldn't practise up there and I'd tell them why! Also I think actually thinking about it...the 'Go Home English' was maybe refering to the English buying property in Wales for Holidays homes simply because it was cheaper than England thus not giving the Welsh a chance to buy because they had bigger mortagages because of better pay in England... sending house prices in Wales through the roof compared to before...I remember this on the news in Wales and thought myself the same thoguh wouldn't set fire to peoples property for it..It angered alot of people because if it had been cheaper in Devon/Cornwall etc they would probably have bought there!!! Then these houses are also going to waste only being used for a couple of weeks/months a year when a Welsh/English/Pakistan family (for all I care) could have bought it and lived there permanently thus shops and other amenities miss out too!!

I never mentioned St Fagans. Just pointing out how bigots work the other way round too. In my example it is a camp on the edge of the lake of Bala in North Wales. I don't remember the camp name as I was only 10 or 11 and basically blanked the dump out of my mind.

I didn't say Cardiff is practically English, just a hell of a lot of people on Anglesey say that. Try being a south walean non-welsh speaking kid growing up in Anglesey. You might as well be a german living in London in 1942. Dressed as Hitler. As for being there on match day I was in Swansea when Cardiff were playing them. We were in the pub by the train station and were told to leave because we were not football hooligans. Walked outside and the car park was flooded with coppers, police dogs, mounted police, riot vans etc. Well cool when you are 18 and off your head.

North Wales is massively different to the rest of Wales. For starters the language is a bit different (didn't help we got taught Welsh by a north walean *and* a south walean...), but the North views themselves as like some kind of different country.

The original "Go Home English" because of cheap housing is all very well, but when that filters through to the next generation and becomes changed to mean "Go Home Anyone Who Doesn't Speak Welsh" then it's not very good. As for the original feelings, well that didn't stand up too well either. I remember hearing a story back in college about how a law was trying to be made in Wales to make the housing more expensive for English people. Just English. Would have agreed with making it cheaper for Welsh people, but just English? So it's ok if an American comes over and spends their money, or hell, a German who served in WW2. But not an English person. Seriously cannot tolerate that sort of racism in this day and age. And when it comes to buying houses, then suck it up a little. Plenty of English people cannot afford to buy houses in their own country not just in Wales.

Kind of glad the prices went up as my parents (and a lot of other Welsh people I know) slogged their guts out for years before finally seeing a return on their property and could afford to move out here. Myself I realised there was nothing in Anglesey, so got a CS degree and left the country (to be fair, not that much in north England either) which allowed me to work my way out here.

Cheers

Highlander; I know you really are a nice guy and would not be involved, but when you said

" I'm running a 24/7 luxury Excecutive taxi service around Paphos area and to and from the Airports with very competitive rates,as well as importing cars to order from the UK its mental just now !!!!! "

I remembered my daughters brand new Merc was stolen to order last year by 'gangs' . The police said "probably its half way around the world by now".
I wonder if it ended up in Cyprus? Can you please look in the boot and look for my screwdriver............. (only joking....about the screwdriver that is)
Regards

I agree no such law smaking it more expensive for just English should be passed..and I'm glad it wasnt...thats just rude!! As for house prices...you may be glad (I am too for your parents) but for the younger generation just starting (like me) Its damn hard to find a tidy place worth buying...believe me I tried!! I think I'll always be stuck renting and basically giving my money away because I couldn't get the start I needed...could you imagine if I'd looked in England...they'd have laughed at me! and my 'pocket money'!!!

but for the younger generation
Calm down! I'm only 34! :(

But yeah, housing market is now impossible in the UK. Luckily I am a programmer and got pretty decent wages when I wanted to buy a house (about 1998 although it took me another 2 years). But now my current salary (well even the one in the UK; I now only work 4 days a week in Cyprus for the same company) wouldn't be good enough to buy the same house at the same multiplication they give you (3.5 at the time).

North Wales though used to be nutterly cheap. I remember my parents house cost them about £28k back in the 80's, and pretty much stuck at £60-70k for about 15 years after it went up in the 90's. Was only in the last few years that the prices went up decently there (about £145k in the end).

My sister bought the same time I did. Mine was a three bedroom near Ascot and cost £126,500 at the time. She bought a similar sized house (with much bigger garden) for £30k on Anglesey. Apparently the year before the owner bought the place along with the 2 either side of it (was a 3 house terrace) for a *total* of £30k. He did them up a bit, sold one to my sister for the same price, gave one to his son, and kept the final one to get rent on. Nice... Although 2 years later my sister sold up for about £60k profit (was when Anglesey went through the roof and is now not too far off English prices) and now lives in Paphos.

Saying that, it looks like the prices are shooting up to almost match England all over Wales. My Uncle who lives in Aberaeron (with most of my mum's family) has pretty much turned into a property tycoon overnight thanks to owning a few modest places.

My Yugoslavian friend just told me that her sister (who lives in Belgrade) just applied for a 40 year mortgage. Can see that (and longer) happening in the UK soon. Along with handing your mortgage down in the will (isn't that what China or Japan does?). Plus apparently now they have increased borrowing to 5 times your salary, and upto 7.5 times in some cases. People are seriously going to be in debt forever with this sort of thing...

Cheers
