Cyprus protests US official`s expected visit to north
NICOSIA, 02/13 - The Cyprus government has made representations to the United States over a coming visit to Cyprus` Turkish Cypriot areas by the US commercial attache at the US Embassy in Ankara, Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou said Saturday.
According to local press, the commercial attache, who was not identified, will be escorting an American business delegation and fly from Turkey to Tymbou airport in northern Cyprus.
Speaking to reporters, Iacovou said, "if the visit by the commercial attache finally takes place, I underline that this action will constitute a violation of the Cyprus Republic`s laws and UN resolutions 541 and 550."
"What makes us especially worried is the fact that the delegation will be escorted by the US commercial attache in Ankara. The allegation that he will facilitate their contacts is not valid. We have made representations to the US both in Nicosia and in Washington," he said.
US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher confirmed on Friday that an American business delegation will visit the Turkish Cypriot controlled part of Cyprus, accompanied by the US commercial attache of the US Embassy in Ankara.
"This delegation is consistent with our goal of easing the economic isolation of the Turkish Cypriots by expanding business contacts on and off the island," Boucher said.
The United States and the European Union have sought to reward the Turkish Cypriots for backing a plan put forth by UN chief Kofi Annan while the overwhelming majority of the Greek Cypriots rejected the plan for the reunification of the island in a referendum last April.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops took over the northern third following a failed coup seeking union with Greece.
